So my wife and I are both escape room enthusiasts and we also both work at one. We found Mystery Maui through Facebook and made it one of our first destinations while we're on vacation and it did not dissapoint. A MUST for anyone either new to the experience or for veteran players! One of the first things we learned was they do all PRIVATE bookings, which is definitely an appeal to most players. Our first game was The Ramen Shop and the set design was instantly impressive and immersive! The puzzles were well thought out and, while intuitive, challenging enough to make the game a blast. The owner, Kit, did great things with visual puzzles in both rooms, and nowhere in any of their games did we ever feel like a puzzle was arbitrary or obtuse enough that we needed a clue, it was only when we overthought or didn't follow through on the obvious intent that we got ourselves lost.
Next game we played was Stella Superstar, a mildly creepy room that plays out like an old episode of Goosebumps, a campy creepshow that tickled more than it scared, and I loved it. I felt like this was the harder of the two rooms, it required more abstract thought to put the pieces together, but when everything clicked into place it was immensely satisfying. Some great hands on puzzles that really turn up the immersion and great soundtrack for the room put the cherry on this one for me.
Last we did Grouchy Grandma, a quick ten-minute puzzle built out of a small cabinet they use as a mobile game or introduction to escape rooms. I love places that have these, it's just enough to finish off the experience and scratch the do-another-room itch for experienced players, or a great aperitif for new players to get them excited. The puzzles were simple but the creativity I saw in their other rooms was still definitely on display.
Lastly, the mods, Kit and her husband Deron. A superbly welcoming couple who let us into their shop with big smiles and great conversation. It was great talking shop with them while they also kept us engaged and excited for the rooms we were about to play, and their lobby is a nostalgia filled buffet of nerdy references (the manga wallpapered bathroom was one of my favorite things about our visit!) Some of the best owners I've had the pleasure to meet, and if we ever get back to Maui this place will be first on our list to go revisit when their new third room is up and running. These guys are doing FANTASTIC things, and should be up front on the itinerary for anyone visiting Maui, doubly so for any escape enthusiasts landing or living...
Read moreThis is the second escape room we visited in Maui. We visited Mystery Maui on a Sunday at 2pm when we had a flight out of Maui at 6pm. We easily had enough time to enjoy ourselves before needing to be at the airport. The drive to the airport was only 15 minutes. The staff was enthusiastic and eager for us to be there. The owners designed both of their rooms and were appropriately proud of them. After playing the new Stella Superstar room, I can say they have good reason to be proud. The room is complex with a wonderful build-out, interesting puzzles, and an intriguing story. We had no prior knowledge of Stella and were not hindered in any of the puzzles. I've personally completed almost 40 escape rooms but was totally (and pleasantly) surprised by some of the features and puzzles in this room. The room is possible with 2 people I think though 4 seems about the right amount. Fair warning, if you are creeped out by dolls you are going to have an immersive experience, which can only add to the fun. I can't wait to try the other rooms here when traveling...
Read moreWe recently organized a team building event for the employees and volunteers at Cat Cafe Maui and decided to treat them to an escape room experience at Mystery Maui as a way to thank them for their hard work. None of them had ever been to an escape room before, so they were all unsure of what to expect.
The puzzles were challenging and kept them all engaged and on their toes throughout the entire experience. It was a fantastic way to bond and work together as a team. They were able to solve the puzzle in time.
The team members described it as "a fun activity to do with friends" and "an unforgettable and engaging team-building experience full of thrilling action and brain-wracking puzzles."
Overall, the escape room experience at Mystery Maui was a huge success, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and exciting team building activity. It was a great way to show appreciation to the team and create lasting memories together.
Big Mahalo to the owner and facilitator, Kit, for an unforgettable and...
