Capel of Joan of Arc

Located on the Marquette University campus, The 500+ year old chapel is surrounded by gardens. It is best to visit during the summer as the gardens are in bloom and there is significantly less student traffic. Parking can be a problem as Marquette is an urban university located in downtown Milwaukee.

During the Hundred Years War there was a period when France suffered significant and repeated losses. It was during this period when a young woman, Joan, received several visions instructing her to lead an army to protect and recover France. King Charles VII appointed Joan head of his armies. (The situation must have been dire as Joan was very young.) After many successful battles, Joan was captured by the British and burned at the stake. She was only 19 years old.

It is believed that this is the chapel where Joan of Arc had her vision. The actual name of the chapel is Chapelle de St. Martin de Seyssuel. Most of the chapel was built in the 15th century though there are sections that appear to be much older dating back to the 12th century. Originally located in Chasse France, it was moved to storage on Long Island in 1927. In 1965/1966 it was reconstructed and relocated to the Marquette campus.

In addition to the building there are altar cloths and other old relics inside the chapel.
