I am writing to express my profound disappointment and concern regarding the treatment my mother and I received from Mt. Neboh during the planning and execution of my father, Michael Anthony McPhee, Sr.'s Homegoing service on July 7, 2025. I waited to write this review to ensure I could provide a clear and objective account of our experience.

My father was a longstanding member of this church, and my brothers were all baptized here. One of my brothers (Malik McPhee) passed away 5 years ago and his homegoing service was here as well. Despite my father's long history and the fact that he consistently praised and respected Pastor Johnnie M. Green Jr. as a mentor, Pastor Green inexplicably deemed my father not a member due to his inability to attend regularly or pay tithes, attributing this to his severe health issues, including multiple back surgeries and esophageal cancer. We were charged $1300 for the service and informed that payment was required within 48 hours, or the service would not proceed. This was particularly upsetting given my father's consistent hospitalizations and battle with cancer over the years. During his final months, my family and I tried to reach Pastor Green without success; it was Deacon Jones and another Deacon who ultimately visited and prayed with my father.

The process of scheduling the service was fraught with difficulty. My initial contact, Ms. Jannette, displayed a dismissive and condescending attitude, lacking compassion for a grieving family. Subsequently, I received a call from Ms. Sally (also known as Tish) from a blocked number, who then added Pastor Green to the call. They introduced the "small fee" which quickly escalated to the $1300 demand relayed by the funeral home, to be paid within 48 hours. Communication then shifted to email, resulting in significant delays. I had questions regarding what the $1300 covered, expecting a choir or singers, but we only had a piano player who sung a beautiful song. We also observed what appeared to be a church recording without our permission. Additionally, a video tribute my uncle wished to play was denied without prior review, yet no details were discussed regarding what was permitted or what required pre-approval. Neither Sally nor Pastor Green was reachable by phone (private and blocked phone numbers), which meant I paid the $1300 without clear information and answers.

During the service, Pastor Green's eulogy included a comment stating my father was not an active member. This was heartbreaking and contradictory, especially given that other church members present remembered my father and confirmed his attendance to even where he sat. His petty comment was noted by many attendees and was later talked about. It deeply offended us, particularly given my father's prolonged illness. Whatever tithes my father owed for not attending service I wish I had in all one-dollar bills to throw in face as he spoke. However, I do understand God doesn’t like ugly but, that’s how I feel. I believe that pastors are servants to the Lord, and this experience, driven by what appeared to be a focus on money, has left us with profound disappointment.

Within a week after the service, Sally emailed me requesting a phone call, which felt like a belated attempt at a supportive comforting call that should have occurred before the payment.

Based on our experience, I cannot recommend Mt. Neboh. We rate our experience 0 out of 5 stars and strongly advise others to seek another church home.

In response to the review by the McPhee family, unfortunately, Mr. Michael McPhee, after joining Mount Neboh and prior to becoming sick was never an active member. Yes, he did attend several services, maybe 3 to 5 at the most, but he never was consistent in his membership, nor in his financial support of the church. Second, Deacon Steve Dawkins did check on him often on behalf of the church. Last, this family didn’t like the church’s protocol with regards to making funeral arrangements, and they were unhappy with having to pay fees to staff and security for the service for a none active members. Long before Mr. McPhee became sick, he was not an active member. Joining the church and not supporting the church does not equate to active membership. I am appalled that this family would make such disparaging comments about our church. Also, the funeral home, Isaiah Owens, did not properly communicate the funeral policy of our church with this family when they made funeral arrangements. This is what happens when people do not go to church or support the church, but when someone in their family dies, they want the church to be there for them. You have to attend church and support the church, if you want the church to be there for you in your time of need. The church owes people nothing but Christ. Yes, I liked Mr. McPhee. I thought he was a nice person, but he was never an active member of Mount Neboh. I remember only baptizing his youngest son and eulogizing his oldest son. Our church accommodated this family every way possible. Mount Neboh owes the McPhee family nothing but Christ. I wish them well, and I hope that they will find a church home where they truly become active members so that the next time they need a church to funeralize a love one, they will not have superficial...

We visited Mount Neboh Baptist Church during our trip to NYC so that we could attend the Sunday Morning’s Mass at 9.30 and it was definitely worth it. The tourists will have a dedicated area in the gallery above the Church where you will have an insight of the worshipper and of the amazing gospel chorus that only gives goosebumps. There were not too many people so it made the experience even more authentic. It is a great experience that is definitely worth experiencing. They will ask for 10$ each to attend the Mass (only cash) and it will be given to the Church.
