But also COLTON RYAN. WHAT AN AMAZING PERSON. SUCH A VOICE.
I had the opportunity to see both, and Colton definitely sang better. I saw him first, so maybe that's it, but I loved his performance. He's also extremely humble (see his insta! @coltonthewizard) and he's so sooo happy to take autographs - he even wished me luck in my application to Columbia. Ben Platt has to run out every day into a limo bc he's so famous, but Colton slips out the stage door with headphones and goes unnoticed :/ he is Amazing with a capital A and SO worth seeing - don't not see it if Ben isn't there!!
okay if you've stuck with me this long: Rachel Bay Jones!!!!!!!!!! The only person who consistently made me cry, her performance is truly, truly Tony worthy. Her grief each day touches even me, heartless teenager that I am.
Actual review of the theater: very nice, small. All gear and concessions are crammed downstairs? Keeps the focus on the show and that's good.
Actual review of the show: Benj Pasek and Justin Paul created a contemporary sound with lyrics that ring true for people from middle school to post-retirement. Each song is beautifully captured to reach into the moment. There are great little details with repeated and changed melodies that recapture and repeat themes throughout in different settings, as do subtle word choices that reflect on the metaphor of the window throughout the whole show. Don't want to give too much away (if it's possible to have lived this long without spoilers???) Each song is haunting and in a well written range for the middle 50% of the population. It's relevant with the social media trends of today, and the blurred lines of reality and truth that it creates. It also deals with loss and the gray areas of guilt that come with relief and grief. The plot resonates with anyone feeling lost, hopeless, or alone, and if you are going through anything, from a bad day to depression to suicidal thoughts, please, please listen to this soundtrack. If you get the chance, see the show. No one should have any doubt that it matters that they are here. No one deserves to be...
Read moreWith my girlfriend,I attended Dear Evan Hansen last night (February 2nd). The show was fantastic, we really enjoyed it - well worth seeing.
We had an unfortunate incident with one of the members of staff; this woman appeared to be in her early to mid thirties, has blond hair and was running the merchandise stand upstairs next to the entrance to the mezzo seating section. My girlfriend wanted to buy the music score to the musical and was looking at several of the book and t-shirts on sale. The sales representative refused to let her look at one of the books, kept gesturing to give the first one back, clearing her throat and staring at my girlfriend, making her feel very uncomfortable. The sales representative did not ask directly to give the book back or state anything my girlfriend was doing was incorrect. There was no one else waiting in line, my girlfriend was not rude and didn't cause any trouble - I was there the entire time and was shocked to see the sales representative's behavior; the woman was behaving as if my girlfriend was trying to steal from the stand which clearly was not the case. All the rest of the staff was very pleasant and we were very thankful for that.
At the end of the show, we went to the bottom floor and purchased the merchandise from the pleasant, helpful woman there. I am writing this review in the hope that this feedback will reach someone who can speak with this sales representative and ask them to behavior more appropriately in future. The encounter was very unpleasant and left us feeling uncomfortable for a good portion of the show, which was very sad. Especially considering the topic of the show, I would hate to see this repeated.
Thank you for...
Read moreThis review is for the theater and the show, Dear Evan Hanson. The venue was great. Staff was friendly, courteous and professional. View from seats are unobstructed and other than the extreme wings the seating provides adequate view of the performance. Bathrooms are downstairs and are clean and adequate in size to accommodate intermission needs. Some have reviewed the roominess of the seating negativily. I would say the are average for any venue. If you are large or tall, you may find the seating inadequate, otherwise it's fine. The show presents some powerful issues in a modern way. The topics and and language may not be appropriate for the youngest of viewers. Taking teens, even young teens, should be fine and may prevoke valuable discussions. There is the topic of suicide, but also a theme of inclusiveness, which is certainly a common theme in entertainment. Overall, the performance was good. Our party felt the musical numbers were good, not great. The acting was very good and the chemistry among the cast members was very good. Emotional scenes were presented very powerful and evoked high emotions from the audience. Without spoiling the story, the bottom of the second act felt as if it was severely underdeveloped. There is a revelation made that just hangs there and seems as if a third act should have been devoted to issue. Good show, good performance and good venue. It's not going to blow you away, but you will enjoy...
