Did you know this park on the Upper West Side is connected to a tragic love story? Straus Park is named after two prominent New Yorkers that died on the Titanic…Ida and Isidor Straus. They were portrayed in the 1997 movie. The Straus family were first class passengers, and they had the chance to board a lifeboat along with their maid. Ida and Isidor were by Lifeboat No. 8. They could have both boarded, but Isidor felt bad since there were still women and children on board. He refused, but wanted his wife to go, she refused. Ida told her husband this: “we have lived together for many years. Where you go, I go.” So, they stayed. Their maid told reporters in New York what she said. Her words struck a chord with people. The Straus’ lived close to the park on 105th and Broadway. The highlight of it is a statue of this nymph. Behind it, there’s a large bench with an inscription saying: “Lovely and pleasant were they in their lives and in their death they were not parted.” That’s the same sentiment Ida shared on the night of April 15, 1912. ……… ……. …… ….. ….. …. … #nychistory #nyc #titanic #lovestory #nycpark #upperwestside #uws #newyork #titanicmovie #discovernyc #iloveny #nyclife #nyctravel #thingstodoinnyc #iloveny #isidorstraus #strauspark #lovestory

Sorry that I couldn't help myself... for long I've had a crush on Kate Winslet. But seriously though, the park is a nice islet of respite in Manhattan's cityscape. Always subdued with people just sitting on benches and reading or listening to iPods. The monument's sculpture is very lifelike, with impressive detailing of the clothing's pleats. One imagines that when the Titanic sunk en route to New York City, many residents here were robbed of loved ones, so this is a very impactful memorial to good-byes left unsaid.

Straus Park is alive right now with daffodils, tulips, and many other flowers 🌺🌹🌸💐 This urban oasis even has a floral aroma, with the right breeze. And, on the anniversary of the sinking of the Greatest Ship in the world⛴️, the statue of "Memory" dedicated to the Strauses, is the main focus of the park.🌲🌳🌲

The most notable feature is a bronze 1913 statue by American artist Augustus Lukeman of a nymph gazing over a calm expanse of water in memory of Ida and Isidor Straus, husband and wife, he a United States congressman and co-owner of Macy's, who died together on RMS Titanic. The model for the statue was Audrey Munson. On the memorial is carved a passage from Second Samuel 1:23, "Lovely and pleasant were they in their lives and in their death they were not parted." The passage refers to Ida's choice to stay with her beloved husband, Isidor, rather than get safely into a lifeboat. The Strauses lived in a house at 2747 Broadway, between 105th and 106th Streets, one block south of the location of the memorial. The park exists on a small triangle of land at the intersection of Broadway and West End Avenue. It was known as Schuyler Square when acquired by the city in 1895 and was renamed Bloomingdale Square in 1907. Between 1995 and 1997, Straus Park was renovated and expanded to the west, by the addition of 15 feet of West End Avenue. An endowment established by the Straus family funded the transformation of a neglected reflecting pool in front of the sculpture into a planting bed. The Friends of Straus Park fund maintenance and the planting of...

One of those amazing little oasis spots at the crossroads of two major upper W. Side Avenues (West End & Broadway). This beautiful little park boasts beautiful landscaping with flowers, trees, and various foliage. There’s a fountain where lots of birds come to bathe and a beautiful statue of Ida Straus, one of the most famous victims on the Titanic. This is a beautiful place to sit and read a book while munching on breakfast from Absolute Bagels or a snack you just picked up at any of the nearby restaurants or coffee shops. It’s always safe and always clean, somehow. Truly one of my...
