Smoke!! Support The Room! My wife, two younger daughters and I arrived at 5:30 for a 7:00 show. Tickets in hand, reserved a great table for four. We ordered our drinks and appetizers. Shortly thereafter, the Maitre d' politely informed me that I had tickets for a show the following sunday and not that evening. As we were in from out of town, the tickets would be worthless as we would not be able to attend the show the following week. Rather embarrassing for me on many levels. The staff discussed our situation and recommended staying in the bar area, enjoying dinner if we wished, and hoping for someone to not show. Well, the show was sold out, and everyone arrived as planned. There were no seats for us. However the staff made an accommodation for my family and me to enjoy the show from the back of the room. We were served drinks as normal patrons, and had a fantastic time. While she certainly didnt need to, the manager bought us a rounds of drinks and several food items that we ordered for dinner and offered to refund the cost of our four tickets. I rarely, if ever post reviews of places I visit, but our experience as Smoke was simply outstanding. The staff made something very special occur after a mistake I made on our family vacation. The Music of Cyrus Chesnut, Freddie Hendrix, Mark Lewandowski and Willie Jones III was simply exceptional. The men put on an exceptional show. Exposed our daughters to true musical talent, and something they will not soon forget. A Thousand Thanks Smoke! Everyone support the...
Read moreSmoke is the real deal. There is only one other jazz club (with no restaurant) in NYC that offers such a consistently stellar lineup of superb jazz musicians. Among those we have enjoyed here, to give you a sense of my and my wife’s jazz preferences: Brad Mehldau, George Cables, Joe Farnsworth, Emmet Cohen, Bill Charlap, Billy Hart, Cyrus Chestnut, George Coleman, Vincent Herring, Al Foster . . . the list goes on.
On top of the music, the kitchen - run by Paul Stache’s wife and co-owner Molly Sparrow Johnson - produces consistently excellent dinners that are readily a solid notch above other clubs that operate a restaurant.
Paul himself is usually in the club, making personally sure everything is running smoothly and chatting with guests and musicians. Laurie, the club’s manager, is always welcoming and making sure the uniformly attentive and friendly staff is in top form.
Aside from all that - if you can’t get a ticket (it does occasionally happen), Smoke offers a live streaming option (and excellent CD recording). I am a bit of an audiophile and can assure you the sound quality of Smoke’s on-line streaming service is the best - I’ve listened to them all - as is the camera work.
Unless you’re into fusion, funk or other jazz offshoots (nothing wrong with that, just not my cup of tea) and wish to hear great jazz musicians preceded by an excellent dinner in a wonderful atmosphere, this is THE club to...
Read moreSmoke Jazz Club exceeded my expectations and I will be back again. Great vibes with even better music, this place is something everyone would enjoy and should experience!
FOOD -was great which made the overall experience even better. we started with the grilled octopus and roasted pork which did not disappoint. The octopus was soft and tasty with a nice char finish from the grill and the pork was a tender and savory slab pared with an apple- apricot chutney which was soooo good! For dinner I had the New York Strip medium rare. This was steak house quality ! The outside had a nice crust and the inside was cooked to perfection.
DRINKS- we’re good, I asked for the Chai Espresso Martini and I’m pretty sure I was given a regular Espresso Martini which was fine, I didn’t mind. My bf had the old fashioned which was also really good! Would have been better with the cubed ice 🧊 to avoid getting watered down but it was still really nice.
Vibe/Music- The total atmosphere was stunning and intimate. At first when you step in your hit with the beautiful bar and chandeliers, it kinda gives off 1920’s. The space feels super romantic so I definitely recommend for dates. Because the space so intimate every part of the restaurant has a good view of the stage. The artist were great and the music did not disappoint. This place overall was very welcoming and inviting. Can’t wait...
