I discovered this hotel by accident. Looking for a hotel that was under $200. This matched everything I was looking for. The hotel is on the west side of Central Park right off of 96th Street. The area has many places to eat and is not in the hubbub of 42nd Str and all the action. I was looking for a more relaxed setting but wanted a subway station nearby. Once again this was right out the door. Lines 1, 2, or 3 can take you there. If you rather travel above ground there is a bus that stops right outside the door.| If you have a flight to LaGuardia or JFK the subway can get you there and cost you less than $6 to LaGuardia or $11 JFK. Compared to $140 by taxi or $75 by Uber.| If you are looking for excellent home cooked food look no further. The Manhattan Diner is right next door. They offer a huge menu.| The Newton Hotel offers hot water in the lobby to make yourself a cup of coffee or tea. Besides a hot drink there are chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal raisin cookies to nibble on anytime. | The hotel staff is very friendly and offers suggestions or directions to places. They have many flyers in the lobby that give you ideas of what to do while in NYC. Grab yourself a City Guide at the desk. Inside you will a fold out map of the city, subway map, and bus map. | The room that I requested was on the 5th floor in the quieter section of the hotel. Another option would have been a room facing Broadway but I did not wish to hear the city traffic in all hours. The room had a queen bed, desk, chest of drawers, a tall cabinet with a microwave and good size mini refrigerator (which stored left overs and drinks). There also was a closet that stored our luggage and clothes for hanging. The bathroom was a decent size with a tub-shower comb, hair dryer, and lots of nice smelling soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion. There where plenty of towels offered. (3 lg towels, 1 hand towel, 2 wash clothes, and bath mat)| In the lobby you will find a soda machine, business station, and storage offered if you need to store your luggage for a late day flight.| I would return to the Hotel Newton it offers a lot to a traveler away from the...
Read moreTo start with the good, and there is a lot good about The Hotel Newton. The location is fabulous for getting many places easily and quickly. The subway stop is less than a half block from the hotel entrance. You can make it to downtown in only a few stops. Central Park is an easy walk. Quite a few restaurants in the area. The hotel was a nice historic building with updated decor in the rooms. The room was clean and bathroom was small but clean and bright. The staff were all friendly. We arrived about an hour before check in but they got us a room. It was just being cleaned when we got there so we had to wait a couple of minutes but I could tell the cleaning was thorough and the housekeeper was friendly. The price was very reasonable. ||So, why the reduction of a star? The bed… the mattress was terrible and really needs to be replaced. The word that comes to mind is squishy. It has clearly outlived its utility. If you’re sharing it with someone else you will feel every movement and you sink down because there’s very little support. Would I stay here again? If I knew the mattresses had been replaced… yes… no question. If I was traveling by myself and didn’t have to share the bed… maybe. If it was the same mattress and I was traveling with my spouse, then probably not. Lots of variables… location, price, convenience, cleanliness… but the bed is the key element...
Read moreWhen I booked a room at the Hotel Newton I was informed that there was free Wi-Fi. When I arrived I was told that the Wi-Fi would be $15 per day. In addition, they added additional cost to my room as a "Resort fee." This place is anything but a resort. The rooms are small which is expected in New York City. However there are no services offered here except a simple room which are dated. Many of the rooms do not have their own bathrooms and thus the guests are required to use community bathrooms. The windows are very thin and therefore you can hear all the traffic and construction that is taking place around the hotel. The front counter personnel are unfriendly and when I ask them for simple directions they treated me as though I was a bother to them. Make sure to check all the fine print if you book a room here. The air conditioner units are inserted in the window and thus, a lot of air either hot or cold depending on the season gets into the room. One of the positives about the hotel is that it is directly across the street from where you enter the subway and thus it is easy to access Times Square or anywhere in the city for that matter from the subway. Another negative is that the elevator is very slow and you will wait up to 10 minutes for it to arrive. There are plenty of places to eat near the hotel; however, for the money there are much nicer places to stay that are very close to...
