While on a walk I noticed the statue of William Henry Seward and became curious about him. What did he do that made him worthy of a monument. This is what I found about him.
William Henry Seward (1801 - 1872) was a lawyer who served as state senator and governor. He lead many anti slave policies and was an ambitious politician. However, he lost the Republican Party nomination for the presidency to Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln and as well as his successor president Andrew Johnson appointed Seward as the 24th Secretary of State.
During his term in power Seward was involved in many negotiations for US territory expansion, one of which was the purchase of Alaska with Russia (Alaska Treaty 1867) for $7.2 million. That’s a rate of about 2 cents per acre.
At the time of purchase many American leaders, such as newspaper magazine editor Horace Greeley, were vocally sceptical and called this purchase as Seward’s folly. Ironically Greeley was best known for his quote to go west young man. I guess Greeley didn’t mean go North West to Alaska.
Seward was also a victim of a near death knife attack by Lewis Powell during the conspiracy (1865) that also included the assassination of Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth.
