Great place for meeting locals and tourists, and seeing the beach, surfers (day or night actually), fishing, just spend the day. You can see the one legged gulls, people catching some little fish (not many ) even catching lobsters or crabs. Theres usually someone performing, always people walking, chatting and chilling, and you'll bump into various sects selling religious concepts. If you don't like that, they are well meaning, and probably easily avoided. Nice benches to sit, and if you enjoy fishing, try it, suggest to go at night and you can drop a line, with no bait even, just a glow stick and you can grab a mackerel almost instantly. More experienced (or lucky???) fishermen can catch some nice fish, you don't need a license, so thats really nice, but you do need to respect the size limits, thats a good thing, because over the years, the fish seems fewer and fewer here. The area near the pier and Oside west of the 5 are gentrifying nicely, you can find some really nice experiences here now. I think its a good balance between Carlsbad and LA with an honest gritty vibe like LA but enough of the rich Carlsbad/Encinitas "plastic" robot people hoping to feel better by flaunting their wealth around "normies" (people). To each his own. Regardless, if you keep a fun attitude, you will enjoy...
Read moreWe went to the beautiful beach with medium/large waves on Tuesday, June 19th, right next to the Oceanside Pier. Warm day, around 80° with a blue sky and white puffy clouds. Very safe and friendly beach with plenty of bathrooms and showers. Not too crowded, plenty of room to put your umbrella up & towel down. Water was very clean and the surf about 6 feet. Sand was also very clean, absolutely no trash or broken glass anywhere. We ate at Ruby's restaurant at the very end of the pier. Excellent service, delicious food and the prices were fair, especially for the fantastic view we had sitting outside to watch the sunset. Ruby's is open 9am to 9pm all summer long. There were many people 🐠 fishing off the pier plus they had several wash basins for clean-up. As for parking, I never did find any that was free. However, I parked right across the street from the pier for $5.00 all day! There's also parking literally right next to the beach 🏖, also for $5.00. If you are thinking about going, I strongly recommend it. The Oceanside Pier is a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. There's benches all along the pier if you want to rest and take photos or just visit. Enjoy...
