Let me tell you, the city of Owensboro has spared no expense when it comes to Smothers Park. It is not only an awesome place to take your children to have loads of fun playing on the multitude of different jungle gyms, slides, monkey bars, as well as many other fun things to do at the all new state of the art playground. But the park itself is nestled directly on the Greater Ohio River riverfront smack dab in the middle of downtown. It's a gorgeous park in itself, along with a couple of beautiful concrete trees that look amazingly real, this park sits directly between the Owensboro Riverpark Center & the Bluegrass museum as well as the Owensboro Convention Center. Owensboro is also the barbeque capital of the world as you know. Smothers Park also overlooks the Clover Cary bridge which has undergone a makeover this last summer , complete with a million dollar light show. A very beautiful sight to behold in itself. And there is also a digitalized LED lit water fall extending from the park itself, all the way down to and into the Greater Ohio River. And to top it off, there is an awesome Japanese Kubota that lights up and changes colors at night like the bridge. The park is also pet friendly , it comes with a picnic area & plenty of freshly cleaned...
Read moreAbsolutely beautiful, well maintained park. We visited on a Monday evening about 6 pm, and it was not crowded at all- granted it was close to 95* still, but a nice wind blowing. There is a HUGE play structure, and within it are areas specific for different aged children. The child I was with was 8 so she was in the “Fox” play areas. There were 3 Fox play areas and let me tell you, some of that climbing equipment was challenging for me! I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the play set as did my much younger friend. The ground is cushioned and the equipment was clean and graffiti free.
Walking along the water, there were many, many different types of seating available. From standard plantar wall seating to beautiful metal swings, to really cool metal boxes, plenty of shaded and uncovered seating. We walked just about the whole length of the park and it was all very clean- no litter, no graffiti. Should mention the beautiful splash pad- looked very refreshing on this hot evening. We enjoyed our time at this lovely park and plan on coming back to enjoy the play set and concession...
Read moreWe used to live in owensboro and have been to smothers park many times with the kids. The playground is excellent, and the park in and of itself is beautiful. In the beginning they had officers patrolling the park, walking throughout, and maintaining the status quo. However, they no longer walk through the park on a regular basis, and every time we have gone since, there are teens playing tag and running all over the equipment, knocking down the smaller children, jumping over the edges of the guide rails, with no thought to look below first and make sure they aren't going to hurt the little kids. When parents confront the teens, they mouth off and cuss, again, not caring that there are little children that don't need to hear those words. Last time we went, my son got poked in the eye by one of them running by, and another little girl almost fell one of the open spaces trying to get out of the much bigger teens way. I won't be bringing my kids back to...
