I was curious to go look at this place and finally I decided to walk there with my dog. We started at the Marina in Southside, at end it was a 3.4miles walk. It was a Friday morning and I encountered some people but sporadically, which made the walk a bit sketchy. It was all fine until past the railways (right after the dog park) where you enter into homeless territory. There are many tents on both sides of the trail. I have nothing against homeless people but I don't have that much experience with them to know what to expect so I was a bit on edge. Nothing happened and no one bothered us so, at the end, the walk wasn't too bad. There were people running and riding which makes me think it is a safe place. I probably would have felt safer on a bike. In any case I made it to the Color Park (and back) and once there it was nice. There were some pretty cool graffiti but most of them were just random writings and scribbles with no artistic value. The view of the city is not the best either. I can see how this is a place where people who want to express themselves with spray paint can freely do so without worries. I like the idea.of it, the execution a bit less. It is a great spot for pictures though and I think it's cool to see at least once. I won't be going back to just walk leisurely but it is a nice trail to run or ride...
Read moreColor Park is a nice enough walking area. If you like jogging, then this is a good place to do it.
There is a homeless camp along the trail, but they keep to themselves, and I have never been bothered by anyone, day, night, or even the witching hour.
My biggest issue is that it is not obvious that painting is now disallowed in a place that is frankly an eyesore. If the city doesn't want people to paint there anymore, then they should buff the entire park and make it obvious. Not leave it as a neglected mess, and then say, "It's illegal to paint here now." As if any further paint on those concrete slabs will do any harm. It's like emptying a cup of water into the ocean and proclaiming, "noo! You made a wet mess!!!" Thankfully, the police allowed us to leave without penalty, but not before they made my friends and I throw away our art supplies. I'd rather do that than get a charge, but the whole interaction was unnecessary and extremely frustrating.
I don't think it's right for those visiting the city to have to deal with this sort of harassment. It was very disappointing, and frankly, I...
Read moreIf you want a small glimpse into the current thoughts and emotions of local artists, take a ride to color park. Don’t make it the only stop though. I suggest eating or drinking something at Sly Fox brewing at the Entrance to Color Park to really get your gas moneys worth. There’s an overlook to the monongahela right here and people definitely fish off the edge of the Mon. It was just refreshed but you’ll find art here from tattoo artists, local crackheads, people that have long passed and just some random kid. I’ve seen whole family’s out here and that’s just cool to me. There’s also bands and bike meetups in this park. I’ve taken some great self portraits in this park In front of art I loved so don’t miss something you might not get...
