We all know that canceling gym memberships are painful experiences but this is above and beyond. Let alone the fact that anybody should be able to cancel gym memberships when there is a pandemic/act of god/force majeure because that language isn't written into the signed contract. What is in the contract however, is in Pennsylvania, every health club follows the Health Club Act which states that every club must add some provisions in a contract allowing a buyer to cancel their membership. One provision states that the buyer may cancel the contract if the health club facility closes for more than 30 days and the health club fails to provide a comparable facility within ten miles of the location designated in the health club contract (Line 3 under the Notice of Consumer Rights on your contract). The club was closed March 16th - June 26th. After I hand delivered a notice exercising my option to cancel my membership due to the club's closure of months, the sales manager refuses to accept my notice. I've gone through the proper channels and the club insists on refusing the notice because the time to file the claim was when the club's doors were closed. I've never been able to cancel a gym membership through email or phone calls, so addressing the situation the first week the club is open feels like it's within the statute of limitations. The only olive branch from the club is they are "willing" to freeze my account for 30 days. The club would ask that I do this indefinitely until the pandemic comes to an end and it is safe to assemble in large groups (anyone see Florida & Texas cases spike??). This is simply not good enough, and by right of the contract, I should be able to terminate the remaining term of the contract immediately.
I understand that these are unusual times and most businesses are struggling to survive after closing their doors for 4+ months but making people/your costumers lives more difficult will only drive us away from your business. I've sent a compliant into the Attorney General's office asking that the club be fined the $1,000 penalty for violating the Health Club Act and will continue to push all avenues to bring these unethical crooks to the light with hopes that it helps one other person get out of having to choose between risking infection or losing...
Read moreA review from a member of 2 years (and counting); This gym is ok.
Let's start with the good:
The quality and selection of the equipment is very high. The staff are also super friendly and greet you regularly when you walk in. A very welcoming staff.
The facilities are kept very clean and the classes and amenities they offer are a plus too.
The price; you can't beat it. It's the cheapest gym in the area and they overdeliver on quality of the gear. Broken equipment is fixed promptly (except for lockers). BUT... keep reading if you want to hear the tradeoffs that low price brings.
Now for the bad:
Because the membership fees are so low, Edge's business model is to pack the gym with as many members as possible. What that looks like in real life is a crazy crowded gym during peak (and most off-peak) times.
When the gym first opened, I had no problems working in on the squat racks or bench presses. Now, it's so crowded on a regular basis, you have to wait 10-30 minutes if you want to use one of these.
Since I don't have the time to wait this long, I just usually opt for whatever machine is available. After awhile, I realized I haven't done a barbell squat or deadlift in 3 months due to the heavy demand on this equipment.
There are 5 squat racks in this gym but they really need 8 to 10.
I have even tried going to the gym on off-peak times and still ran into this crowding issue.
Some other downsides to note is the music in the gym is loud. You need noise-cancelling headphones if you're going to have a chance at hearing your own music.
The gym plays their music at 70-80db and with clanging of equipment and other gym noise, the ambient noise can reach 90-95db (concert-level volumes).
I use working out as a way to reduce stress and it's hard to sometimes when there's loud music playing that you can't avoid.
Other than that, the other downsides are minor like some lockers in the locker room being perpetually broken or guests loudly slamming locker doors closed.
All-in-all, this gym is just ok. If you can live with these trade-offs, then this gym is great for you.
I'm honestly considering leaving. The low price is the only thing keeping me around for now.
Hopefully this was...
Read moreWhat a disappointment of a company. Even though I haven’t been in the business since march when they closed , they couldn’t wait to charge us as As soon the business opened back up in July. They even hit us with a pro rate for the month of July (17.29). Every gym in my area had no issues with cancellations and freezing accounts since the pandemic. They didn’t bother charging us either. The other gyms were understanding. (LA fitness, Planet fitness) I called edge and they gave me the run around saying I needed a doctors note for 1 month of freezing. For every month I need a doctors note stating I cant use the facility. I originally called up expecting to pay a partial price just to freeze my membership (LA fitness offers to freeze the account for a 1/3 of the price), I didn’t even want to cancel it until I got the bs. The GM also said that come 2021 they will NOT even give anyone the opportunity to freeze the account as if this pandemic is magically going to go away. He also claimed that 900 members have been having the same issue... So maybe if you want to make 900 members happy you should give them what they want. Reading other reviews I saw that they are adding on months for the time missed onto the contract for the locked in year. Signing up A few months before COVID hit I had all the intentions of attending this gym regularly, but unfortunately we are all going through this nightmare from COVID. People have health issues they are scared to use the gym, they live with people that have weak immune systems or prior health issues which spreading COVID to them can be fatal. The GM also said that well I still have to pay my mortgage during the pandemic and yes I understand that, bills should be paid to the best of our ability during these harsh times, but the gym is an activity that we chose to join. If you want to see more about the hell this company is putting people through then go on twitter, I’m not the only one going through this. I gave the 2 stars because the other staff members were always very respectful when I did attend and the facility is beautiful but just a very greedy company and...
