In March 2023, I acquired two Urban Worm bags with the aim of significantly boosting our castings production. We initiated the bags with 3,000 (approximately 3 lbs) red wigglers, a mixture of coco coir and cardboard, and introduced worm tea to establish a favorable bedding environment. After four months, we assessed the bags for castings, finding some promising results. However, we decided to give them a bit more time, returning them to the bags for another couple of months. By the six-month mark, we began harvesting high-quality castings with very few worms still present. Now, at the seven-month mark, I've just completed the second harvest, and I'm delighted with the quantity of castings the units are generating. Notably, the bags and frames remain in excellent condition.
During this journey, I've learned a few valuable lessons:
With the worm population now ranging between 6 to 8 pounds, it's best to increase the feeding volume significantly. Maintaining the right moisture level is crucial; a slightly more moist environment is appreciated by the worms, given that the sides appear to dry out a little. Since the bag is approaching maximum capacity, it's wise to add substantially more bedding material for both increased volume and to accommodate the additional food. Our monthly harvests have been consistently yielding between 2 to 3 gallons or possibly even more. This has been a...
Read moreI ordered a pound of worms. Tracking info was mixed but I got my order Friday Sept 12. The bag itself weighed just over a pound with the peat moss they were packed in so I got less than a pound. The only good parts is these worms were all alive and well. I talked to the seller and it's not his fault. The fault is with his partner who shorted me worms. I did not get a pound. I paid for a pound and got the package on the 12th that was just over a pound with packing material. Did mine get mixed with someone else? I initially got the wrong tracking. Maybe another got mine and I got theirs. Other than that, Steve the owner is not to blame. Oh well. Steve's partner at least had nothing else but 100% red worms. With the package that included worms, peat for packing and the bag was just over a pound. All my past orders from other businesses were at least 2 pounds on the package and 1 full pound of worms. Great work Steve. Thank you for what you do. You are not to blame. This is an update as of...
Read moreI live in PA and wanted to support a local buisness being their address states Plymouth Meeting, PA. They also stated they ship on Mondays and Tuesdays. I ordered my worms on a Saturday figuring this would work since we had rain coming the following week and the ground would be ready for the new worms. Monday, no shipping info. Tuesday, no shipping info, Wednesday, no shipping info.... So I emailed them and found out the worms needed to be harvested and they wouldn't ship till the following week. Website didn't say anything about this but they're in PA so I can wait a day or so. The following week I get shipping info and tracked the package... California? What? I supported Urban Worm so they could outsource worms from California? Not too happy about that. They arrived and they're alive, just not happy about the...
