Escape room number 30! Escape the Tower was full and we were just passing through, so we booked Bootleggers' Den (tough room for us) just for the opportunity to complete a room in this fascinating, historical building. The building itself stands out in downtown Raleigh. The room was well-designed from a thematic standpoint with a good mix of technology and item manipulation. Our host monitored the room from his cell phone which gave him flexibility to handle other customers, but made communication a little difficult and caused some delay in responsiveness when clues were needed. We liked the items and keys that were hidden in plain sight, but failed to understand some of the logical connections even after post-game discussions. Probably a good room for 3-4 people. We definitely want to try out the Tower on our next trip for the area!

The building is very cool and they have themed it well. The foyer and waiting area is very small. They say their escape rooms can be done by teens on their own and that no prior knowledge is needed to complete the rooms. Everything you need to solve the room is in the room. However, there was at least one thing our group of teens had never seen before (not to give it away) and couldn't solve, that was an old school item. If you're going to say that no outside knowledge is needed to solve the room, that needs to be consistent and generationally true. We've done a lot of escape rooms, and one component shouldn't stop the whole thing, particularly when it's likely younger people who are participating. There also wasn't a mix of challenges. They were all sort of the same application over and over.

Our group completed the Secret of the Tower Keeper room. We've done an escape room before at a nearby location and I gotta say Tower Escapes was a cut above. The building really helps because it's so interesting and authentic feeling. It did feel like they are still getting a few kinks out of the flow of the escape process but overall the staff was very friendly and helpful and the room was challenging but doable. Seriously though, this ain't your normal strip mall escape room. Pair it with dinner down the street at the Morgan Street Food Hall and you're all set for a fun evening. I look forward to returning for one of the other rooms. Docking 1 star for the flow of the escape but will update after our second visit.

This is the second one we have done with tower escapes. In the first one we got a clue correctly figured out and attempted to put in the correct answer but because of a technical issue and it being very sensitive, it wouldn’t work and of course we thought we did something wrong. At the end of the room, we were told that it was very touchy and although we had the right solution, it wouldn’t work unless we got it exactly perfect. Which did not seem fair at all, most rooms I’ve been in will give you an extra five minutes or so if it was a technical issue. Not because you didn’t get It correct.

So basically, they made excuses for the faulty mechanism instead of compensating us.

In the second room that we did just recently, there was a major issue with one of the components and we weren’t really sure what was going on with it or if we were doing things correctly or not. We were told later that this mechanism sometimes doesn’t work very well.

There was also one visual clue that was extremely unclear, supposedly we’re supposed to put two objects in certain place, and it was in a picture, but the picture was extremely unclear and it was very difficult to even understand after they told us where to look for the picture, it did not show the items that we were supposed to place on the table clearly at all. And when we did do it, there was a delay between when we put it on correctly and when it activated the next clue which seemed misleading for sure.

Then at the very end, we tried putting in a combination to a safe and we thought we had it right which we did but the safe didn’t work

When the game master came up, he told us that there’s been a lot of problems with that safe and sometimes he has to come up the stairs and fix it. So it was a little bit messed up.

Once again, we should’ve been compensated with an extra five minutes or so, due to the mechanical issue.

He just kept making excuses for how the safe didn’t work very well and occasionally he had to come up and fix it for people.

That didn’t seem right to me that we weren’t compensated at all with extra time which we should’ve got.

The fact that the employees even admitted that these things did not work correctly, frustrated us a little bit. It’s pretty hard to get out of escape room if devices aren’t working correctly, and then there’s excuses made by the employees.

And lastly, most of the clues that we got from the game master where how to correctly use a mechanical item and not that we actually needed help figuring out the puzzle. They just told us little things like wait until it comes open, you need to have it in the exact right spot, things like that.

Other than that, we had a great time and we felt like we did really well. But when those things didn’t work very well, it makes it very, very difficult It takes away some of the enjoyment.

I’m not sure if we’re gonna come back for a third room if the devices don’t work and we aren’t compensated with more time when they...

We were so excited and stoked to try the Tower escape room. The location was perfect and it looked like an awesome game. As experienced escape room players of over 20 different games/ locations- we have conquered a great variety of escape rooms. Although we did have high hopes, unfortunately our experience did not match up. For us, there were issues with 2 puzzles that did not work properly when we entered the correct answer. We had to ring the bell and the game master basically told us to do the exact same thing we already did. When speaking to the game master through the camera system, he did not seem to hear anything we said- rather kept asking for a thumbs up in answer to his question. In addition about 1/3 of what he said was jumbled as the speakers did not work properly, and he was cutting in and out, so we could not understand his responses. We tried several times by telling him we did not hear him, but never got a response. In addition, the game master was managing at least 1 other room at the same time as ours. In all my previous experiences, we had a dedicated game master who paid 100% attention to our game and helped instantly when something in the room did not go as planned. When we did ask for help, we had to wait for a response sometimes between 1-2 minutes, which for a timed game room is frustrating. For the price played to play- there should always be a game master dedicated to each room. It is our preference to do rooms that offer multiple aspects of challenge going at the same time so everyone in the group can stay involved. The tower has a 1 at a time type of puzzle, so some of us were just standing around waiting for something to do. This “may” have been due to the major element that did not work properly, if it had it worked on our first try, we could have had 2 teams solving things and moved much quicker. Overall, we had a disappointing experience due to elements error and lack of game master attention, however- if all worked properly I do think this could have been an awesome room to escape. My personal experience scored low but the potential it has is high, so overall we give it a 3. Hopefully my thorough feedback will help provide better experiences for others...

We are escape room enthusiasts and have completed somewhere around 30, however based upon our experience tonight, I would not recommend Tower Escapes. First, the positive: beautifully staged thematic environment with engaging and clever puzzles. Second, we arrived a few minutes late and were accommodated which we sincerely appreciate. Third, very cute posters to hold during the group pic! Here are the reasons for my low review. Our GameMaster came across as apathetic and uninterested in our success. This is the first such experience we have had. Game masters are typically enthusiastic and rooting for the players’ success and we barely heard from the GameMaster. When we took the group picture, the GM asked for my phone and then insulted me because I didn’t realize it was needed for the pic. Other escape rooms take the pic then email it, so it was an honest mistake. So overall, though nothing overtly wrong was done, the GM just wasn’t pleasant to work with. Secondly, some components in the room didn’t work right and we were left to struggle for many minutes trying to get them to function even though it was obvious we knew the solution. We understand this is to be expected with escape room mechanisms, however we should have been assisted speedily. Thirdly, we were told by the GM that clues would be used “only once.” However, two of the items in the room were used 2-3 times. Yet our GM was quick to remind us again about the “only once” when we ran out of time. Lastly, there was no clock so we could see how much time was left and therefore wisely use clues and as previously mentioned, our GM didn’t pace us either. You need one or the other. I sincerely hope this was just an off night, because we had high hopes for Tower Escapes and left feeling let down. Based on largely positive comments left by other reviewers, we may have unfortunately been hosted by an...
