Canal Walk — Attraction in Richmond

Located along the James River in downtown Richmond Virginia. The Canal Walk is surrounded by beautiful views of the James River and the city. Two islands are accessible from the Canal Walk. Brown's Island and Belle Isle. Brown's Island is grass and sidewalk covered and great for public outdoor events and concerts. Belle Isle is tree covered, surrounded by large boulders, with the James River flowing around and over the rocky terrain that encircles it. A wide walking and biking trail follows the river around the island in a circle. Belle Isle is accessible by a footbridge that is a short walk from Brown's Island. With the general dearth of nature sites around Richmond proper this Canal Walk is a true wonder to behold. Stretching far along the waterfront and with numerous entrances and different settings/sites/environments it features the natural beauty of the James River area with a lot of the varied history that has taken place around here. It gives you a great view of the canal and the river as well as much of downtown - it also connects into a very large region of trails and paths. A wonderful nature area to enjoy...

I went with my wife and we saw the art work along the hydroelectric portion, we parked close to 1200 E Byrd St. We parked along the fence, which is much cheaper at $2/hr, 4 hours max. The area is not wheelchair friendly. Some of the slopes/ramps are very steep, titled, not clean and have large gaps/drop offs. Portions are closed off for construction which makes it difficult to navigate if you are not on foot. We will try to navigate additional areas and see if they are more...
