Man who works here (not sure what he does, he was sweeping the ground outside) was incredibly rude and unprofessional. He allowed us to walk around the gardens as everything was just opening. (We’d asked if anywhere near had a public bathroom. He said one street over.) We walk around the pretty gardens and noticed there was an open bathroom here. One member of our party went inside the bathroom. He YELLED over from the road “it’s not a public bathroom” - but another member of our party was going inside the shop (and yes, BOUGHT something, being a CUSTOMER) and asked the (very kind) woman who worked in the shop about the tours. Other party finished in the bathroom and this man yelled again something incoherently, surely it was not positive about this clearly life or death bathroom situation. Relax, we aren’t trashing the bathroom. So we start to leave and we apologize to him saying “sorry we thought since we were going in and buying something we could use the restroom” (only ONE person used this gosh darn bathroom btw) and he grumbled “you’re supposed to buy something first!” Ok uhhh….sorry the PROCESS was out of order for you, was this really that huge of a deal? I get retail and dealing with the public is irritating but we clearly were not those kinds of people. He needs to get his panties out of his buttcrack. And just for that we surely will not be touring...

I had the best but also the scariest experience at the Ximenez-Fatio House! My docent Hannah was awesome and informative and during the tour, while visiting Louisa Fatio’s room, a spirit was making thumping and scraping sounds on the floor above us and Hannah told me that no one was supposed to be up there 😱 I couldn’t believe this was happening. The spirits of the Ximenez-Fatio House came out to play during my visit! I was in awe of the authentic historical pieces inside the property. I got to see an old Florida map from 1837 in the Sea Captain’s room and also the famous Caravaca cross from 1650 that was found in the grounds! The Ximenez-Fatio House is beautiful, historical and classic St. Augustine! Visit this time portal and make some new friends, both from the worlds of the living...

Very historic house museum that dates back to the 1700’s. You check in at the gift shop and during the hot summer that’s about the only room that has AC. They sell waters there but I recommend bringing your own water bottle because it gets hot. The house is 2 levels and you can scan a QR code or use one of their devices to do a self guided tour with a narration through each room. It was a very hot day so I went through the site pretty quickly. It was amazing to see very old things that have been preserved and just how they utilized what they had way back then. Each room was staged with many layers and cool pieces. If you follow the audio it can go by slower but you can read through it instead. It was quite fascinating and not very busy on that...

Very interesting house. Filled with many period pieces. Loved that they offer a choice of an in-person docent tour or recorded tour. We really enjoyed learning about the house and its inhabitants and contents from Julia and Hannah. Make sure you check out the items in their gift shop, especially the books. BONUS: If you continue walking south along Aviles for a block or so, you will come upon the Father Miguel OReilly house which is closed currently due to Covid concerns (it is run by the Sisters of St. Joseph, I think). Turn right on the next street and just outside the school playground on your left is one of the most interesting trees in the area, a live oak with a palm growing right up through the middle of it.

If you have ever wanted to step back in time Saint Augustine is the place to do it, and the Ximenez-Fatio house is one of the very best places to get a real sense of how the times were back then. We took the audio guide tour and loved walking through all the rooms at our (myself, 70 year old mother and 7 year old daughter) own pace. Note that there is no AC in the house, they do have fans set up and the breezes made it tolerable. I learned so much and really enjoyed the experience. They also had a fun "scavenger" hunt for my daughter which kept her engaged, and a wonderful selection of prizes to choose from at the end.
