Microwave kitchen. Came in here because we saw a few beers on tap that we really like (Moreland's Old Speckled Hen, in particular). It was mostly empty and we sat at the bar. Ordered two $9 hens each and they were great even though the bartender didn't know how to pour them (it's a nitro beer, like Guinness), and they were served in straight-wall small pint glasses instead of real pints. She was scooping the head off repeatedly with a spoon and said "sorry, it's pouring all foamy like a guinness". We assured her it was as intended and best to just let it settle and then top it off before serving; eventually she got it. No problem. We also ordered some food. I asked if "chips" on the menu meant "french fries" since the place seemed to have a brit theme all over and on the menu. Nope, they were american potato chips. Again no problem. The $15 burger came and it was pretty lame; a microwaved or steamed frozen patty of questionable quality. It was a very uniform and unappealing brown color and had the look of a sponge-meat mcnugget with matching texture. Look at the picture; that's their $15 burger. It's not fresh, ground, regular meat cuts, grilled or griddled to perfection, it's pink slime made of beef hearts and bholes cooked in the mic. The bun seemed like it was toasted, so maybe they also have a mini toaster oven in the kitchen too. My wife's panini supposedly had chicken that was "smoked in house" (where was it smoked, in the microwave or the steamer?). It also had whole garlic cloves (like half a bulb worth) that were semi-raw and with no caramelization, as if they too were microwaved or steamed. Overall the food was very crappy. On a par with cafeteria food available for 1/3 the cost. Then i got the bill and the burger was "double cheeseburger, $18". The tender assured me that it was the same price and just the way it rang up. I think she was new. After I paid and tipped, I asked to see the menu again. Sure enough it was not the same, but the $15 i thought it was. She refunded my $3 cash, but not the 20% tip and tax that I paid on the extra 3 bucks. This kitchen is a joke. I don't know if the kitchen closed early (we got there around 7pm) and the cook turned the griddle, broiler, fryers off and cleaned them already of if they just don't even have any of that. The microwave was still plugged in at least. Go for a a beer maybe, but definitely avoid eating any of their food unless you're into those pre-wrapped burgers that you get at gas stations and plop in the microwave for a few...
Read moreWent for afternoon tea and was not really impressed. I have gone to many other places for afternoon tea and will not return here again. Despite reservations and us being the first in the tea room that afternoon(even though we were late) they did not seem to be prepared. It seemed to be too much to ask for everyone to get their own tea flavor. We were never offered a refil on the tea. We just had cold tea by the end of our session. The seating is supposed to be 1.5 hrs. It was 1 hr in when we finally received our food. By then our tea was cold. We did end up staying over the 1.5 hrs and it was not a problem. After we received our pots of tea we realized there was no cream. After waiting for server for a while I asked for cream and sugar and she went to fetch cream but told me kind of snarky that we have sugar. There was barely any sugar in the pot and we just got there which is why i asked in the first place and we ended up getting some from the next table. When i made resevations I tried to book for 5. Which included 2 kids. They only had a table for 4 available and asked me if the 2 year old would be ok just sitting with us and not having his own setting. I agreed to this not thinking it would be a big deal. Obviously nothing was offered to him, which is fine he could share ours although i had been willing to pay for him when i made the reservation but when i asked if we could get another cup that was also frowned upon. This was not my idea to just "add" him to our table. I guess they thought he should just sit and watch while his sibling has hot chocolate. Obviously a 2 year old did not understand why he couldnt get any so i gave him my cup until we finally got me a cup half way in to the tea. I can go on and on.. the food was not the best either. The bread of the sandwiches had dried out on the outside. I guess they had been sitting out for a while. Otherwise the sandwiches were nice. The scone was the best part of the whole experience. We hardly ate any of the pastries on top. We tried few bites and they were ok but it didnt make you want to eat any more of it. The setting is quaint and the tea cup and pots were beautiful. It had potential to be an amazing experience but the service and food was subpar in my opinion. I have come to expect more from previous experiences and this would definitely rank the...
Read moreHighly disappointed! I have no problem at all paying for food and good service, but honestly this place was a disappointment. So it's called a tea room, so you would expect a vast array of teas. I think there was a choice of 8 at most. All black teas, no green teas. The display was very unappealing..some teas were packed in boxes, right out of Walmart, others were in a nice jar but the labels so worn, you couldn't read what was on it. Some of the teas in the jars appeared very old, almost wet and stuck to the jar. At least 3 teas were chocolate which left you with 5 choices if you're not into chocolate tea. We were all dressed in our tea party dresses but served by a bartender in jeans which took away from the atmosphere especially after having to walk thru a rowdy bar scene to get there. This really didn't bother me, only I thought of the women bringing in their young girls to have the experience. Why not a separate entrance? Then there were the sandwiches, yes nicely displayed on platters on a three tier plates, but very poor quality. The turkey sandwiches had one very thin slice of turkey on the bread...actually so thin that it barely covered the bread. The desserts were tasty and were appealing as was the tea once brewed. Prices were extremely high for the quality. Service was subpar. Orders were taken, food served and bartender disappeared back into the bar until payment due. 35 dollars plus tip for two tiny sandwiches with mostly bread and cream cheese, a scone and tea. We had to walk into the bar to pay which for women with their children is not appropriate. Ive been to the Russian Tea Room in New York, amazing atmosphere and service and the former tea room in Avondale. This place does not come close to either of those which are actual tea rooms that I enjoyed immensely and had actual quality food, quality teas and...
