The Willis S. Johns Rec Center (located within Fossil Park) has a somewhat-shaded playground that we have been visiting since our toddler was 1! The playground is fully fenced in and has a smaller slide and ramp for younger kids. I'm not sure what age the playground is officially designated for, so I just follow my toddler around closely to provide backup support for safety. There are two swings outside of the fenced area but they are NOT baby swings. There are picnic tables, a shaded gazebo, and some painted cement areas such as four square & hopscotch. There is also a water fountain outside of the rec building. FYIs: The North Community Library is about a 2 minute drive away. Location: Willis S. Johns Recreation Center 6635 Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Street North, St. Petersburg, FL 33702 Hours according to their website: -School Days: Dawn to 2:00 PM 5:30 to Dusk -School's Out Days: 5:30 PM to Dusk -Weekends: Dawn to Dusk Parking: Free parking in their lot. Price: The playground is free! Other Services: -There is a public pool next door which is currently closed. The website says it costs $0-2 per person to visit, and they offer swimming lessons for an additional fee. -The rec center is on the opposite side and hosts a variety of classes, basketball, a teen room, and more. -Fossil Park has baseball fields and more! Visit their website for more info. I was a child who used to go here every year for summer camp or after school. They do have great activities and trips to do but this place is toxic. Especially teen group. I remember a girl who was dating a boy and they kissed (mind you she was 16 maybe older) and they called her parents, caused her to get in extreme trouble, I'm not 100% sure but I think they made them split up. My friend got bullied non stop and they did nothing about it until I practically yelled at them. All they did was talk to the bullies once. It still continued for the whole summer. People where constantly aggressive, not all but most of them. In teen group they made a rule where you could not go on ur phone at all. But we hardly ever left that small room and the only games we had where card games and similarthings to that. Yes they do have video games but all the boys would take over and be so passionate about it, half of the time we wouldn't be allowed to use them. Some days we would have the option to go outside but its FL and I don't feel like smelling like sweat all day. I'm not going this year or ever again due to moving to far away. I made some amazing friends here and met people that I would rather never met. Every year that I been to fossil I was depressed and aggressive and now that I'm not going here and been gone for a year or so I can tell I wasted so much energy and time there. Sure, go ahead and put your kid here but as soon as ur child is clearly unhappy take them out. Its not worth the emotional and physical effort. This isn't all the problems I have with this place. Its just toxic and I was happy once when I was in group...

This is the most awesomeness center I have ever been to. This is one of the most biggest ones Pinellas County has. All the others are to small and are not as much fun. I've been going to Fossil park since I was 10 and I'm now 15 and this is my last year going to teen camp you go to teencamp for 4 summers and the play camp is so much fun as well. I'm going to work at fossil as a JR. Leader next summer and it's a really good first job a 16 year old can get and they still get to go on trip sometimes with teencamp and they get paid a good amount of money . So go to Willis S. Johns rec center AKA Fossil park and you will have the best summers of your life. SO...

Today(Saturday the 26th of June) my daughter had ballet class, love her teacher, she is so excited to come to class, (her first experience with ballet). While there my battery died, tried to get people I knew to help, no luck. The staff gentleman at the desk got me an extension cord so I could charge up my jump box. He assured me it was no problem. I so appreciate the kindness of this man, and the lovely playground for my daughter to swing and play while we waited for my charger to work!! ...
