Ruined by Excess Fees

Stayed at this location recently. This is a typical Embassy Suites hotel, basically the same floor plan they all have, same good breakfast and the manager's reception. Had a harbor view suite and it was very spacious, clean and well appointed. Location is also great, just a short walk to the Gaslamp District and Little Italy. So why the low rating? Fees and minor annoyances ruined the experience. Fees: You have to pay a $25/day fee. Now this isn't a typical resort fee, this is actually more like a daily gift card you can use in their store or restaurant. But, you have to use the credit by midnight each night as it doesn't roll over. Not sure what they do if you check-in after the store and restaurant are closed for the night (one of the days I was there the store was closing at about 1 PM). And the store is over priced, a small bag of M&M's was $5. Even with the excessive prices, I still ended up buying lots of stuff I really didn't need. At least I had plenty of snacks for my return flight. But since my room came with free snacks and drinks, I really didn't need anything from the store. Note: I did notice some people checking in were told they didn't have to pay the fee. Not sure why, maybe it was due to being on some special negotiated price/group booking. Parking: Valet only and is $65/night ($60 if Hilton Honors). No self-park available. You can find cheaper city parking in the area if you want to save some money. If you will have a rental, I recommend seeing if you can go without during your stay. The parking cost me more per day than my rental did. You might find that using Uber (or mass transit) during your stay will be cheaper. The train station is close by as are the trolley stops. Annoyances: As normal, I used the Hilton App to check in before my arrival. It said I successfully checked in, but I had to see the front desk upon arrival. I thought it was because I was using a special rate and they had to verify my eligibility. Nope, had to do the entire check-in process again with them (to include running the credit card). Pretty sure the reason for this is so they can explain the $25/day fee. I couldn't think of any other reason. No matter the reason, if everyone has to check-in at the desk, then turn off the ability to check in via the app. Don't make me go through the process twice. Valet Parking: Unlike other hotels I have stayed at, they did not provide a way to request your car besides in person. I have been at lower level Hilton hotels where I can text the valet to let them know I am leaving my room and to get my car. Check-out/receipt: I checked out via the app. Typically I get a receipt within minutes. This time, I realized I never got a receipt when I got home (5 days later). Went on the app and it said the receipt wasn't available. Used the chat function and the automated system also said the receipt wasn't available. It connected me to a rep (after about 15 minutes of waiting) who said they would send me one. Finally got it, 2 hours later. So while this was a good hotel, current management practices mean I will not return here. There are plenty of other great places to stay...

I stayed at the Embassy Suites for two nights and extended day-by-day via a third party platform GoSplitty and the staff showed microaggresions toward me and reported me as someone not staying at the hotel when I had a roomy key to get in and chose to hang out in the lobby instead of my room. When I extended for a third day (June 24) because I was told by the head manager, Michelle, that she would need an email listing me the name of the people involved and the discrimination I incurred, her and her staff tried to manage me out of the hotel and never refunded me for the night I didn't stay there. On top of that, the paramedics had to come because my blood pressure was rising and I told them if they don't call 911, I will because I am neurodivergent and facing discrimination causes me distress to the point where I could pass out. When the paramedics came, they mentioned that my blood pressure was above average and the recommendation was for them to take me to the ER but that would mean leaving my stuff in the room where the staff would collect it and I had important electronics and documents that I needed since I'm in pre-litigation with a couple of tech companies. The rough total I spent to be treated with discrimination and disrespect was $1,200+ (itemized below).

There were witnesses to the discrimination I incurred from Chris, the security guard who first checked whether I was staying at the hotel after being reported by one of the woman working the free breakfast room. Then Aeacus, the Engineering manager also presumed I wasn't staying at the hotel and instead of checking with my name and key number, decided to show microaggresions toward me and then became performative once he realized I was a guess there.

Had a reservation and even though we didn't arrive until after 6pm our room still wasn't ready. When we did finally get into the room we found that is wasn't the room we requested. My mother who was with me has mobility issues and requires a roll in shower, which they claimed to have and we did request it when booking the room ahead of time. But we were not given. Also it was said to have a ocean view but did not face the ocean even. Yes when you look down the beach you can see water but I feel was rather misleading in its description. Then I went to get ice and got locked out of the room because one of the keys I was given did not work. But by far the worst part of this experience was my niece forgot her birthday party dress, her fancy dress that she had never worn but brought because she was going to a party, was accidentally left behind hanging in the closet. When she remembered we called and were told no one from house keeping was currently there (this was at 8:30pm) and we would have to call back the next day. We then went back to the hotel so we could go back and check the room ourselves but they wouldn't let us because the room was already being used by another party. And again was told we would have to call back the next day. I still don't understand why staff couldn't contact the people in that room and simply ask if it was still there but whatever. So we called several times the next day asking to speak to housekeeping and if anything was turned into the lost & found. And although the person that answered the phone said she would check with the manager of housekeeping it took hours before we had to call them back again and have only gotten the response of nothing was turned in. So I'm not sure at this point if it was the people that had the room after us (which I doubt because the maid is supposed to check the room including in the closet to make sure nothing is left behind) or the maid the cleaned the room. Or the manager of housekeeping that has stolen my nieces dress. Either way it seems that there is a lot of dishonest people working there. They all seem to have the attitude of doing the bare minimum of their requirements for their jobs. And in a place that charges $250 a night to stay and another $55 a day just to park your car there, I expect more. I expect this at a budget motel but not from a hotel with the Hilton name.
