We stayed here a couple weeks ago and I will say the bar is phenomenal. Great drinks, 20s speakeasy atmosphere inside, and a very nice and well-heated outdoor patio in the center of the hotel. I appreciated the drink credits we received, and we used them for appetizers and drinks. My spouse is still talking about the vieux carre drink he had, and I appreciated the wine recommendations. Amazing bar staff, very friendly and fun, which I don’t often expect in a hotel bar! So go here for the bar.
The hotel was not great. It felt uncomfortable to walk in every time. We have a habit of saying hi to people when we see them and the front desk returned the hello 50% of the time which was super awkward while we were waiting for the elevator. I had bought 2 rooms which were non refundable and we had a family emergency so my mom couldn’t join. They spent several minutes telling us why we couldn’t get a refund and I said I know I had already talked to them and was just letting them know not to hold the room. Was just trying to be polite. Totally did not expect anything and I let them know not to hold the second room. They said they upgraded us which l was really confused by because we had requested a king room. The room was the smallest hotel room I’ve been in, which was fine we don’t need a lot of space. But the door the bathroom was sliding and had a large gap when closed so you can hear your hotelmate using the rest room, which I absolutely do not like and makes me very uncomfortable. If you slip easily be careful in the shower it was large, which was a plus, but the tile was very slippery. There weren’t basic things in the room like extra towels, iron, coffee maker. They have Netflix which I appreciated but that’s all for those who care about that. We did request an iron and they brought it up one night we needed it for our dinner clothes. Modern decor but generally very sparse. Could not figure out the temperature we kept getting really hot and really cold with thermostat. The parking you need to pay $20 per day for “in and out” privileges, they give you a voucher for each night, and you buy additional vouchers from the hotel. It’s around the corner. They have a vallet option for $50 per day which I actually think is worth it if you are going in and out frequently, we would just leave once a day so wasn’t worth it for us. Location is right downtown and walkable to many attractions including the peer. So a little noisy at night but to be expected. Personally if I visit San Diego again I’ll probably stay outside of downtown and closer to the beach at a more personable hotel. It just wasn’t worth the high price just for some modern wallpaper. But go to the bar even if you aren’t staying here,...
Read moreSan Diego was our last stop on our 2.5 week California honeymoon. We fell in love with it through the photos online and we were so excited to end on a ‘good note’ with such a cool looking hotel. Boy, we’re we wrong with this one.
Do not be fooled by the photos.... I don’t know who designed the rooms in this hotel but whoever did has no design experience and did not understand the site. Our room was on the corner of the main floor. There were two options for curtain, blackout curtains and then super sheer. The sheer ones did nothing as you could see right in/out. Therefore, we had to use the blackout curtains the whole 4 days we were there because outside is quite busy as it is right downtown. There would be no privacy. As a result, there was no light other than one dimly lit sconce and one cheap reading light on a desk in the room.
As for the room, it is so cheaply made and furnished. There was only a nightstand, plug in, and light on one side of the bed. So for a king bed apparently only one person usually sleeps in it...?! The other person in the bed is left high and dry with nothing. There are no hooks in the bathroom either for towels. There isn’t much space for hanging clothes and definitely no iron or ironing board in there.
Now for the employees ... wow. I’m not sure who forced them into the hospitality industry because it is a hardship for them to even say a simple hi to you. You’re lucky if you get a response back when you say “hello” or “good evening” to them. They’re all super grumpy and way too good for you. They’re always very enticed with their computer doing what?! No clue.
The valet guys are an absolute joke. They’re extremely lazy, unaware, and also grumpy. They also only have valet for a portion of the weekend. The one evening we went to drop off the car and no one was at the booth so we waited awhile. We got sick of waiting and so we tried to leave our keys at the front desk and the person there said “do you mind just waiting for the valet guys to show up?” Her time was much more valuable than ours apparently.
As for housekeeping. The person cleaning our room would leave our stuff strewn across the room however he liked. Whichever made his life easier. Our clothes were often found in a heap on the nightstand, chair, or desk. All he did was made our bed, put a towel or two in the bathroom and he was out of there.
Take your money elsewhere. I will never stay here again or recommend it to anyone. There are so many great options in San Diego and this isn’t one of them. They won’t last. He would always leave us with just two of the following; hand towels, face clothes, bath towels. But...
Read moreWARNING: The size of the rooms are very concerning.
I don’t know where to start. We had a terrible experience. It shows up as luxury boutique hotel but there is no luxury involved at all. A. Hotel Room: • We booked an apprentice room, King Bed via Expedia. The room was ridiculously tiny and made us claustrophobic. The coat hanger and mirror are built in, so if you were to hang your coats or clothes, you wouldn’t be able to see yourself in mirror. The TV was right by the corner of bed and door, you might bang your head into TV if you are not careful while walking. After talking to the staff at reception, they moved us to the another room and it was a bit decent sized. I appreciate the staff but why not provide such room the first time. • For a “luxury hotel”, there is no bath tub in the rooms. Both the rooms only had standing shower. • For a “luxury hotel”, there is no gym in the hotel. • For a “luxury hotel”, there was no valet service. It is self-park. However, they have contract with the parking garage. If you buy upgraded parking via hotel, you can have unlimited in and outs. • I do not have much knowledge on the interiors but to have photo frames of individual in uniform without their heads is very creepy. • For a” luxury hotel”, there was no refrigerator in the room. • The lotion/body wash had cigar fragrance. Like who would like their body smelling like a cigar! B. The hotel is only 6 floors tall. If you plan to have a good view there are literally 4-5 corner rooms which are generally reserved for the VIP/Elite members. Rest all rooms will give you a view of building or the wall or the garden cafe. C. Room Service: They had amazing Cue card for room service/do not disturb. We did put the cue card outside our room for room service. At end of the day when we got back, our room wasn’t cleaned/stocked with new towels. We enquired and they said, guest are supposed to communicate verbally in person. Seriously! Why would you provide Cue cards if they don’t work? Why wouldn’t you tell the guest during check in that they need to notify for room service in person. D. Restaurant: The TV has list of all activities and hours of operation. It shows bar/dining is available 7:00 to 11:00pm daily. We tried to place an order around 10:30pm and they said kitchen is closed on Sunday. Why can’t they provide information upfront.
PROS: a. The only good part of this hotel is its location. It is very close to little Italy and you can access the USS Midway Museum very easily (10-15 mins walk). b. The staff was very nice and apologetic, but that apology is pointless if your stay is ruined. c. The provide free...
