I will start by saying that the props and ambiance are put together nicely and very well thought out. I didn’t feel the same about the game, content or clues.
I have done a few other escape rooms at different facilities and in comparison I didn’t find this one hard, I found it very confusing. We had to ask for multiple clues and although the clues made answers clear, I still couldn’t figure out how on earth I could have found those answers without being told.
I felt like the instruction was lacking. A few tips for if you decide to go. The introductory video in the beginning, which usually provides context for the scenario, is actually full of information that you will need at the end of the game to solve the final puzzle. You will want to try to write down as much as possible unless you have a brilliant memory. We didn’t know that until the end when the game master told us that we should have memorized that. Unfortunately we were unable to go back and watch that video making it impossible to finalize some of the clues.
Also, there are clues and props in different areas of the room. Some of those props need to be kept together in their groups. Others need to be linked together with other clues through the room but it’s impossible to know which need to stay put for later and which should be pooled together. Our strategy was to get every clue together into the center of the room to figure out which pieces went together which later made it impossible to solve the puzzle because at the end we couldn’t remember which group of clues belonged to area a, area b, etc. The game master’s response was that we should have memorized that. Those instructions would have been really helpful at the beginning.
Lastly, I’ll speak for professionalism. Our game master was a very nice young man who really wanted to be helpful and we appreciated that. But, he came into our room multiple times throughout the game to talk to us which we felt kind of “broke character”. Also, we could hear the staff talking and laughing in their break room/control room the entire time. It sounded like a party and that also took away from the experience a little.
Overall, I think there are a few ways that Escapology could improve this experience such as detailed instructions in the beginning of the game, clues with more purpose or intention, clarity of game objectives, and overall...
Read moreI would say my experience here was kind of subpar. The staff here are great so I don’t blame any of the negative aspects of my experience on them at all. The room itself we did, Murder Mansion, was just really underwhelming compared to other escape rooms I’ve done.
The first thing that was pretty odd to me was that they go went over rules and tips with us in the room. To their credit, we were very late so I don’t know if they did this to save time, but it was distracting as I couldn’t help but look around and try to start solving puzzles. If that’s the usual process I definitely recommend doing something different. Also once the game master went over rules with us, she left and a video played that basically just reiterated all the rules she had just told us, and THEN a video of the story played but by that point I was mentally checked out and just wanted to get the game started.
Most of the puzzles were fine, however one really bugged me in the beginning because we were given a hint to do one thing but the answer that actually solved it you couldn’t really get to without just guessing. I went through the puzzle itself multiple times and couldn’t figure it out. This really set us back on our time which was frustrating. Also, the room felt really sterile. We were supposed to be solving a murder that we’d been framed for, but all the puzzles just felt like a continuous genealogy lesson and didn’t seem to fit the “murder” theme. Overall it just wasn’t very entertaining...
Read moreI recently visited Escapology San Diego, and I must say, it was an experience that exceeded all my expectations! The true gem of this place is Augustus, the manager. His exceptional customer service, profound knowledge, and genuine enthusiasm truly set the bar high. He was incredibly helpful, answering all our questions with a smile and ensuring we had a seamless experience.
The cleanliness and organization of the venue were impeccable, creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. It's evident that Augustus puts a lot of effort into maintaining a polished and professional environment. But what truly blew me away were the escape rooms themselves. They are masterfully thought out, challenging, and incredibly engaging, setting a new standard for what an escape room experience should be.
A special mention goes to the Budapest Express room. The craftsmanship of the set and the immersive decor transported us right into the heart of an adventure. It was like stepping into another world!
I can't recommend Escapology San Diego enough, especially with Augustus at the helm. Whether you're an escape room enthusiast or trying it out for the first time, this is the place to go. Thank you, Augustus, for such an...
