3/30/24 I had an amazing experience yesterday at The Futon Shop. I had called Friday and spoken to the manager and said that I needed a stand/platform and a bed, and that I'd be in the next day. When I showed up the next day the person there, Johnny, knew what I was talking about, and already had the mattress and stand picked out for me (they sell mattresses made of natural materials as well as futons) - I didn't have to explain the whole thing again. The amazing thing, I think, is that I said I had $700 to spend, out the door, taxes, everything, and they gave me this fantastic mattress - and not their cheapest futon.
You can unzip everything to see all the components (pillows, futons, mattresses, sofas and chairs). For this mattress, the components are cotton-covered springs and natural (not petrochemical) latex, all of which is surrounded by wool, which is lined into the mattress all around. Wool is a natural flame retardant, and the Feds accept this in lieu of dousing the bed with chemicals.
I am being given the floor models of the mattress (there is a thick cover on all of the beds on the floor, which keeps them clean), and stand (which is on legs, with wooden slats to permit air access to the mattress). As it happens, each one is what I would have chosen, if I had any amount of money to spend.
I tried out all their pillows: latex, shredded latex, wool and buckwheat, buckwheat only, wool only, cotton, and something called Kapok, which is an alternative cotton, and come in standard, queen and king sizes, and settled on the only wool one, and will be back for that. (There are antimicrobial copper covers available too.)
When I looked at the invoice, the price of these two items, had I bought them new, out the door, would have been about 3,300. I am just floored. Of course, I understand they need to move inventory and I figure these items have been on the floor for awhile, but still.
Really responsive customer service. The delivery of both items will be $80 - totally reasonable. Just a great experience.
I had not thought of chemically-free furniture as related to futons, but that's what the futon market has become, and I am so glad. Plus everything is locally made. I can't recommend this particular store highly enough. On...
Read moreAre you sick of smelly new mattresses and interested in The Futon Shop's non-toxic options? DON'T DO IT.
The mattress I bought from The Futon Shop doesn't smell like off-gassing plastics, which is great, but it does reek like a barn. Literally like sheep and animal feces. The website hilariously refers to this as a "fresh" smell, and states that it takes "up to a week" for it to dissipate. My experience is that after two months, it's still so strong that I don't want to be in the room with it, much less sit or lie on it. I've let it bake in the hot sun for hours, but no change. I finally purchased two mattress covers in the hopes of isolating the smell, but eventually the odor permeated those too. Here's how bad the smell is: the odor transferred to the mattress covers, and after washing them twice they still reek, and now my dryer reeks too. I mean, what the heck?!
Please be more transparent about this on your website so that other people don't have to waste their time and money on products that won't work for them. I tried to post a review on their website to provide information on my experience so that other customers could use it to make an informed decision, but discovered that they won't let negative reviews post to their website (presumably that's why every review for every mattress on their website has an average 5 stars... I thought that meant the company and products are great, but now I'm seriously questioning that assumption).
With better information, I could've picked a different mattress that would've worked for me, and been a really loyal customer. Instead, I feel really disrespected by this company, and just stuck. I can't even sell this mattress, given how much it stinks. Please learn from my mistake and give your hard-earned money to a...
Read moreOriginally i was pleased with the prompt customer service and my mattress until realising jt was 3 inches short. I was told upon proof of photos it would be replaced and the faulted one could be donated. A parenal death caused a 2 month trip overseas and now that appearently negates the original promise. On top of that the original staff member has now ignored all contact with me for a month, no-one will respond to my emails or calls and the 'manager ' i was told would contact me almost a month ago has never made any attempt to. The customer service seems only to be prompt before they recieve your money and not after. Overall, what was originally a wonderful experience is now a frustrating one where im out almost $1000. edit - the response from 'management' below seems to be only for show. Noone has bothered to comtact me for a month now despite me emailing them daily. They seem to calculate 5 months as 9, which just impacts that no-one at the futon shop has matamatical skills past that of a 2yr old child. Misses 3 inches off a mattress, and cant calculate that april - june is 2 months and not 9. Hilarious. Wished id paid on credit and not debit card as id have done a charge...
