I'm not quite sure if I've ever reviewed a park before, but hey - there's a first time for everything, right? if you're new to Seattle (or simply just visiting) then this is a place that you'll remember. I don't know the exact history of the place, but if you're here then I'm sure you can find the etymology of it with a few clicks. If not, it's really not that important.
I'll start out by saying that this is my second trip to Gas Works Park, the first being in 2018 and the latest in 2025. Two of my pics are from my first trip, the second - my latest.
Looking at the place from a top level perspective, there's not a lot to report. It's just as the name entails - a few industrial-type looking machines that have long since passed their prime. I found that on my 2018 trip here, they graffiti added to the allure, whereas my most recent trip saw the ruffage and "decor" cleaned up. Sometimes a bit of grunge goes a long way (pun fully intended). Nevertheless, it's a nice place with great views of Lake Union, the non-traditional view of downtown (as opposed to Kerry Park) and green, rolling hills (and geese; lots of geese).
I only spent about 20 minutes here each time. I got my pictures and left, but I can see where you could make an afternoon of it if you so desired.
In addition to being a "must see" place in Seattle, I'd say that the only downside of Gas Works Park is getting there. It's not really near a Light Rail Station (unless you could 1.8 miles "nearby") and I couldn't seem to find any bus routes that went too close either. If you've got a rental bike or want to spring for an Uber, then it makes it a lot more accessible. I seem to remember taking an Uber the first time, though I was staying nearby and the most recent trip was a long walk from the University of Washington. Admittedly, there is a trail (the Burke-Gilman Trail) that does run right into the park and keeps you off the roads. It's a nice walk, but I opted to take an Uber back to the Light Rail stop and took that back downtown. You do as you wish.
TL;DR Great views of Lake Union and Downtown Seattle Interesting perspective on out-of-use machines Difficult to get to unless you're...
Read moreGas Works Park in Seattle is an absolute gem that offers a breathtaking blend of natural beauty, unique remnants, and stunning views. I have visited this park numerous times, and each visit leaves me enchanted by its greenery, picturesque setting, and post-apocalyptic charm.
The park's lush and well-maintained grounds create a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The expansive green spaces are perfect for picnics, leisurely walks, or simply basking in the beauty of nature. The park's location overlooking Lake Union and the iconic Seattle city skyline provides a breathtaking backdrop that adds to its allure.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Gas Works Park is the remnants of the gasification plant, which now stand as intriguing structures covered in foliage and brush. These remnants add a unique and almost surreal touch to the park, creating a juxtaposition between nature and industrial history. It's as if you've stepped into a post-apocalyptic world, where nature has reclaimed its rightful place amidst the remnants of the past.
During the summer days, Gas Works Park truly shines. The vibrant greenery, combined with the sparkling waters of Lake Union, makes for a stunning and memorable experience. The park offers ample space for families, friends, and individuals to relax, play outdoor games, or simply soak up the sun.
While Gas Works Park is generally well-maintained, it's important to note that being an open park, there may be instances of animal feces, which can be a day buster if stepped in. Although encountering animal waste can be a minor inconvenience, it does not overshadow the overall beauty and charm of the park. Just exercise caution and be mindful of your surroundings to ensure a pleasant visit.
