While this park would benefit from some upkeep, it’s as wonderful as its namesake and just about as well known.
Terry Pettus was a strong activist and journalist. He fought for the poor, the working class, and those discriminated against. He battled in the newspapers and on the picket line. He was blacklisted and imprisoned for his membership in the Communist Party. Later on, he organized houseboat owners on Lake Union.
His assistance organizing a cleanup of Lake Washington exposed reckless polluting by the City of Seattle. It’s the reason why we can visit this park and enjoy the relatively good water and nice view. But his vision with the floating home community was broader.
He pushed for rent control and against freeway construction. (Also against condominiums which reflects poorly in today’s world.)
