We had a fabulous view of the ocean/gulf as well as the pool from our 4th floor room (444). It was only warm enough one day for us to make use of the tiny (barely a chair deep) balcony - rooms on either side of us had much larger ones - and the heater/ac vented directly where 1 chair would be best positioned. Sturdy balcony single door with lock had no screen, so secure, but door would have to be left open (with risk for bugs) if you wanted fresh air without using the room's fan.||Hotel was super clean. The hotel staff were constantly cleaning the tile hallways on 1st floor - keeping sand, any insects and dog footprints from tracking in further. And staff consistently cleaned tile/carpet halls on our upper-level floor at least twice daily. Our room had comfortable beds, although one of the 2 in our room had squeaky springs. Room included a couch & rolling ottoman near the window (favorite reading spot during our rainy week, with good floor lamp). Plus a rolling table (fit against wall) and sturdy chairs for in-room meals or serving as a small desk. Tile/cement floor transmitted sound between rooms when those chairs or rolling furniture got moved, but no voices carried between rooms unless their room door was open, echoing into hallway. Dogs we saw were kept on leash by their owners, and well-behaved. We experienced only 1 day of a nervous dog left alone in a neighboring room who barked for a couple of minutes every time someone stepped into the hall.||Great breakfast buffet was included in room price, with customized omelets, prepared to your order, available in addition to waffles, fruit, cereal, eggs, potatoes, refried beans, yogurt, bagels, mini muffins. Soft tortilla wrap breakfast "tacos", pre-made with a variety of fillings, were also offered. Biscuits and gravy were featured in the buffet lineup a couple of times during our week-long stay.||It was too cold and rainy during our week for us to venture into the hot tub or pool, both of which looked sparkling clean and welcoming. We did enjoy the convenient boardwalk access to the beautiful soft-sand beach on non-rainy days. We knew the January forecast was for some mid-40's to 50's days, but with very high winds during our week found we needed our heavier coats and thermal layers for all outdoor activities. The one 70-degree late-afternoon when we arrived was a hint of what we missed the rest of the week.||We chose our South Padre Island visit time hoping to view a scheduled SpaceX launch, which ended up delayed a week. You can see the SpaceX launch site from the beach by the La Copa hotel, and from a couple of windows of the 4th floor breakfast hall. The state/county park about 2 miles away are the closest viewing sites for launch. We drove about an hour to visit the Boca Chica SpaceX complex as they prepared for the launch, and the road was open that day for close viewing of the rocket on the pad, as well as the historic "Hoppy" vehicle which made 1...
Read moreThis USED to be my favorite hotel at SPI until this last booking. I booked a one night stay FIVE MONTHS, yes 5, months in advance because I saw a really great price on Booking for this night. I paid for this booking back in February (booking in July) and was booked and good to go (or so I thought.) I rarely get to stay at SPI any more because room rates have gotten so ridiculous since 2020, so I was quite pleased to get a great price for this one night so I could treat my fiancé to a nice night at SPI. HOWEVER, on the day of my booking when I was just arriving at SPI, I got a call from the hotel stating that they had input the incorrect price for my room and that I would either HAVE to PAY ($67 & change) MORE dollars than I had already paid to keep my booking or I would have to CANCEL my booking. Mind you, I live 2 HOURS away from the hotel, so cancelling my booking would have really put a huge inconvenience on my fiancé and I along with a waste of gas driving there. I pleaded with the girl who called me and asked to speak to a manager. The call was then given to the "manager" JACOB who was extremely unprofessional and pretty much told me to just deal with it even though I had prepaid this booking FIVE MONTHS in advance. He didn't care at all and after questioning him for this shortsightedness for about 5 minutes, he had the audacity to tell me "I'm not going to go back-and-forth with you about this. You either pay the $67.xx or cancel your booking. Which do you want?!" Wow! What an amazing "manager." I then out of the realization that this guy was clearly not the manager that I needed to speak with, asked him to let me speak to someone higher up or give me their number to which I was told there "was nobody higher than him." I'm sorry? You mean like you're the owner and president of La Copa? YOU'RE the boss of everyone there?! LOL! I then asked to speak with the owner or for a contact number for the owner to which Jacob responded "That's impossible. They're not here and I'm not giving you their phone number." Wow! What an upstanding, professional piece of management and a GREAT representation for La Copa! (SARCASM) Needless to say, this really ruined our entire weekend as my fiancé and I were extremely ticked off the entire time. I will NEVER stay at this place again because of the disrespectful level of rudeness and incompetence displayed by the "management" here!! I have since spent HOURS on the phone with Booking and they've ran me through the loops sending them PDF's of my bank statements and screen shots, etc, etc, etc... this has been a NIGHTMARE..... BEWARE when using Booking or any third party service to book here because they may not honor their listed prices on the DAY OF your booking! Ridiculous. I really hope JACOB learns how to deal with people some day. I wonder how many people this has...
Read moreThis was a good hotel for the price. You can tell the management and staff try to make it look clean and nice. Looks like recently renovated (new paint, fixtures, carpet). It reminds me of middle-of-the-road hotels in other beach towns and Mexico. The room was clean and had full bottles of shower essentials for use. Plenty of storage in the room. There was a table on wheels so you could roll it out to eat around. There is a ceiling fan above the beds and a light over the sitting area. I never saw a bug, which is saying something when you’re visiting a humid area like the valley. All staff was professional and nice. No issues with parking, we left a few times and had no issue finding a spot when we got back. *only 1 parking permit per room. All others go to overflow parking across the street. Right on the beach, easy walk on the boardwalk. There are umbrellas, chairs, canopies to rent. I hadn’t realized breakfast was included. It was good, reasonable options. They gave you tickets for one taco or omelet. Both were good. The room was more like a cafeteria, not a restaurant. Looks like it used to be a banquet hall. Cons: beds weren’t very comfortable, they were firm. The sofa bed had no sheets, we had to call down for them (but they brought them up quickly). The rooms have no view (except for another condo/hotel) unless you pay for a pool view. The pool was very busy at night, but there was a security guard there to keep an eye on things. I’m not sure how to phrase it, but the majority of the clientele was not my favorite - listening to loud music with 2-3 canopies together (don’t care that they’re making you listen to their genre of music), drunk, singing loudly on karaoke machine, bathing suits are cutoff shirts and tank tops, large groups of families, not watching children as they play in the water and pool… it was not a nice resort-type place. But it might just be what’s expected for the price. *the other issue was the unexplainable increase in charge that they tried to get me to sign for at checkin. I’m not sure if that’s common practice and they hope that people don’t notice the charge, I just know the clerk couldn’t tell me why it had changed from the reserved amount. It was an increase of almost $500. They fixed it and I was able to see the refund on my credit card. I would watch that if you choose to stay there. Overall, it was a good stay. It’s obvious to see the effort the staff puts out so the guests have...
