Costco Tigard – Room for Improvement
I’ve been a loyal Costco shopper for years and generally have a very positive impression of the company. The quality and selection of products are usually excellent, and most locations deliver a great experience. However, my recent visit to the Tigard location highlighted some areas where I believe management can make meaningful improvements.
First, I want to be clear: my comments are not aimed at criticizing individual staff members who are already working hard—many of them are likely in lower-wage positions and doing their best under the circumstances. The responsibility lies with management to ensure proper training, clear processes, and leadership that support a smoother, more satisfying customer experience.
Gas Station Practices At the gas station, I witnessed staff continuing to pump gas after the nozzle automatically stopped. My hybrid vehicle’s manual specifically warns against overfilling. I had to raise my voice to get them to stop. This is not only against manufacturer guidance but could also damage vehicles. Staff need clear training to avoid such practices.
Produce Quality Control Some fresh produce—like cherry tomatoes and strawberries—was visibly moldy when I opened the packages at home. Better inspection before items go on display could prevent customer disappointment and food waste.
Food Court Chaos The food court experience was disorganized. Orders seemed to be called in random order, with some customers waiting seconds while others waited 20 minutes. By the time I received my pizza, it was cold, and my ice cream had melted. The staff were clearly busy, but without a structured process, the result felt chaotic and inefficient.
Overall, these issues point to one thing: a lack of consistent training, process optimization, and oversight. I strongly encourage Costco Tigard to take a page from their Beaverton counterpart, which runs much more smoothly, and address these problems with concrete steps.
Separate Concern – Costco Online’s Glaring Security Gap
While my Tigard feedback focuses on in-store issues, I also have to call out a major, ongoing problem with Costco Online. Despite two-factor authentication being an industry standard for online security, Costco has repeatedly refused to implement it. I even provided their IT team with working sample code in Python and Java and offered my personal help to integrate it—yet they chose to ignore the risk and instead told me to “just change your password more often,” which is both outdated and ineffective advice.
The result? My account (and likely many others) was compromised during a major hack, with someone in Texas using it to buy a PlayStation. Even after this incident, Costco still refused to implement two-factor verification, which could dramatically improve account security and protect millions of customers. This is an unacceptable and preventable security lapse that Costco must address...
Read moreThis is the closest Costco to where I live so I go there instead of the others. But I want to give an honest review. It seems like nobody else does. Pros: This Costco has the fastest checkout of any around even though they’re busy. Same applies to the gas. They ARE moving very fast. It’s just too many cars. Customer service is overall very good. You’ll have a bad experience 1/20 times which is good if you think about it. It’s usually clean and organized. They have good quality housewares at good prices. They sell the best towels, rugs and mats for like $10-20. Can’t find similar anywhere else.
Now the cons: -VERY busy. At peak times the gas line will be backed up blocking the street. Unless you are there already I would spend the extra $5 somewhere else and save yourself the stress and 30 minutes. -It’s so busy you’ll have trouble finding parking even though it has a large lot. People are stressed about it and will be driving aggressively too. -They are sold out of a lot of high demand stuff like Costco baked bread and chicken. -This is the smallest Costco around. They told me a few years ago that the hillsboro store is the largest in the world. This is like 1/2 that size. -The return line is slow 50% of the time and it’s random. No time of the day is better. -The food court is pretty bad. In every way from dirty ketchup dispensers to slow food even if it’s a hotdog. -It’s expensive. No longer is Costco cheaper for staples like eggs, soda, milk, etc. maybe the stuff that goes on sale is but only on sale. -Their hours are short especially on the weekend. I think they close at 6 on Saturday.
Now for tips: -They have very good produce. The best around actually and most at good prices. -Use the self checkout. There’s usually no line so it’s much faster if you have less items. -Go as early as you can. They’ll be sold out of stuff in the evening. I haven’t been able to get a chicken or bagels for months now!
Overall I go there because everywhere else is terrible. Safeway Albertsons Fred Meyer Walmart target etc are all slums. Usually sold out of milk and cereal with filthy floors and only one register open. It’s a sad state of affairs but I guess that’s what we get with the socioeconomic and political environment me we have today.
Give this Costco a try if you need house stuff, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, potatoes, carrots, meats etc but it’s not worth the time for just a few...
Read moreAlright, hate to do it; but after several horrendous trips it’s clear this has to be the worst Costco out there and I’ve visited stores in over 40 states and 5 different countries..
Jim G working 6/30/24 needs to be moved to stocking or some other non-customer facing role. He’s supposed to be helping the cashier, yet he’s running around frantic with manic energy, stressed and doing nothing but messing things up and being rude to everyone he interacts with. In a 6 person line I didn’t see him help a customer unload a single cart, but he sure did yell at a lady that was just trying to pass back through to her family after returning from the restroom “this is an designated work space go around” he scowled at her. Umm, good sir if that’s going to be Costco policy enforced in such a demeaning way then the stores all need renovated to allow for people to pass through to the restroom and not deal with Jim G’s of the world. Next, he isn’t doing his job still or paying attention and gives my cart to the guy in front of me when that customer didn’t have a cart for his 3 items, leaving me cart-less with a cart full of items on the belt. So I had to tell the cashier and she had to stop what she’s doing to fix his mistake. Then he got huffy about my wife wanting a box “ugh we’re low and I’ll have to repack”. You can throw it on top of the 5 items you’ve placed in the cart sir, and point to 5 boxes directly behind him. This guy is just going around being incredibly unpleasant, whilst managing to be bewilderingly unproductive and stressed over placing items in a cart. Josh accurately and pleasantly checking receipts whilst making small talk and actually keeping the line moving is one of the best of any store I’ve been to, he knows how to interact with customers; honestly get him overseeing customer facing employees and have him help bring the other consistently perturbed worker David...
