The first time I tried to come here, I drove past it twice. It sits close to the rear of the parking lot, so it's not right along the street.
I'm glad I made it. This is the 2nd best used bookstore in central PA (Midtown Scholar Bookstore in Harrisburg is #1). My opinion is subjective in that they have more of the genre of books I'm looking for, and more hardcovers/large format books that you would want for your library.
There is a smattering of other things peppered throughout, like comic books, collectibles, and music. Everything is separated by genre and there are many seats around so you can sit and read before you buy. There are a lot of books, aisles and alcoves. It has the feel of a library, and I felt very comfortable. It is well worth the trip to drive here. In the past couple months I was disappointed in all the different bookstores I traveled to. But that doesn't mean you will be, because you may find what you're looking for, which will make your trip there worthwhile. But with everything considered: presentation, inventory, pricing, and ambiance, the York Emporium checks all the boxes for me.
BTW, 3rd on my list is Cupboard Maker Books in Enola, which has a large selection of books and a few cats that are...
Read moreLove this bookstore, one of the best in Pennsylvania! Leaving a review because the parking here is super difficult to get right. There is a large parking lot in front of the store but be warned, your car will be booted or towed if you don't park in the two parking spaces next to the handicapped spot to the left of the store. The "York Emporium Parking Only" on the right corner of the lot is for the owner so don't park there either or you will be booted as well. Owner should really make sure his customers park correctly and warn them when they arrive as he sits right by the front entrance. Apparently this happens to customers on a regular basis and the boot company is aware that it's a problem. Cost to remove the boot if you catch the boot company within the first five hrs is $75, prices increase afterwards plus towing fee (estimated $350). For a used book store that has great $5 below finds just pay for street parking with quarters. It's not worth figuring out the parking lot situation until the owner buys more parking spaces. Very friendly owners though, absolutely have had no issues with the...
Read moreThis is one of the best bookstores I have ever been to. I personally am a history fan, but there is something for everyone. His prices are unbeatable. I'm not sure if I enjoy the books or the conversations on history more. The owner actually wrote at least one book on the Civil War and is very knowledgeable on that subject and on history in general. If there is a book you want that he does not have it is as simple as telling him the name of the author, title, and edition and he can acquire it. I also sell him books and have done that on two separate occasions. He is very fair and easy to deal with in that matter. My only suggestion is not to go if you are in a hurry because you are depriving yourself. There is so much to see here and by not actually taking the time to look, you are likely overlooking some...
