When deciding where to stay in El Calafate, I was sold on America del Sur, because of photos of the common area and good reviews on the breakfast offered. Turns out I made a great choice. The common area is inviting, laid back, cozy and no matter where you decide to hang out, offers a great view of the mountains. There's even a deck/sitting area outside. I enjoyed being there at the end of the day for the atmosphere. The staff was really really great. From being friendly, welcoming, and sociable they gave the feeling of a small homey hostel where everyone knows each other. There's some really friendly dogs that hang around. You'd feel like adopting them. I thought the breakfast was quite adequate including scrambled eggs, assorted breads, jams, alfahors, etc. They'll even make you a nice boxed lunch for the following day if you request it. The asado(BBQ)was very delicious. Again, the restaurant/ bar staff was very friendly, sociable and conversive. The chef offered to make me a Churripan before leaving the following afternoon! So traveling with me was my wife and 24 year old daughter. My daughter felt like she was back in college because of the atmosphere and young adults staying there. Yes, my wife and I could be parents to most of the guests, but we loved being around them. Everyone was really cool. The place is a hostel, so we had a private room with bunk beds, private bathroom/shower, excellent hot water, floor heat and the beds were very comfortable. I thought the location was fantastic because of the view and it was in a quiet area. Most people are there for the outdoor activities and hiking, so the 5 or 10 minute walk into town shouldn't bother you.The photos show exactly what it's like. I really enjoyed my stay here, I'd stay here again and would definitely recommend it. Shout out to Juan who is part of the front desk staff. We had some nice conversations outside on the deck while he...
Read moreIf I could give more than 5 stars, I would. América del Sur Hostel isn’t just a place to stay, it’s an experience, a vibe, a community, and a second home tucked into one of the most breathtaking corners of the world.
From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed not like a guest, and that feeling never left.
Abby, you are the soul of the hostel. Always kind, incredibly helpful, and radiating warmth like a human fireplace. You made everyone feel seen, heard, and cared for. Mateus, your energy is contagious. Welcoming every traveler like an old friend, always up for a laugh enjoying , some good food or sharing something. Your generosity and spark brought life to every moment
And Vero, thank you. Your kind and caring nature made me feel like I was family. Your unwavering support, and your ever-ready smile made even the small things feel like big gestures.
But it’s not just the people, it’s the atmosphere. There’s an unspoken magic here. The crackling by the fire, music echoing softly in the background while the mountains peer through the windows, this place has soul.
The view? Unmistakable. The kind that makes you stop mid-sentence just to stare out and whisper wow under your breath.
The room? Spotless. Clean, cozy, and warm.
What sets this place apart isn’t just the scenery or the comfort , it’s the people and the feeling. You arrive a solo traveler and leave part of something much bigger.
I’ve stayed at dozens of hostels around the world, but this one, this is the one I’ll always talk about. This is the review they’ll show future guests. Trust me, if you’re even considering staying here, book it. Stay longer than planned. You won’t regret it.
Can’t wait to come back. Forever...
Read moreWe stayed here for two nights. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. There‘s a nice communal area with a great view and live music in the evenings which can be used to hang out during your stay.
However, as with a lot of things in El Calafate, this place felt overpriced for the value-for-money you get.
Despite being a hostel the double room costs around 100$ per night, so you‘d expect a certain standard of quality.
The room itself is ok. It had a bit of a strange smell though. Decent bed and good shower pressure. The bedding (lining and sheets) was too small for the actual mattress and pillows. It barely fit, resulting in one waking up directly on the mattress the next morning.
The breakfast was disappointing. Not much choice except for a lot of sweets (jam, cake, dulce de leche, cornflakes, etc). The scrambled eggs didn‘t look very appealing and the toast quality was quite mediocre.
The laundry service offered was very quick. You drop the laundry in the morning and get it back in the evening on the same day. However, they (not sure if washed by the hotel directly or if they‘re working with a 3rd party) seem to either wash or tumble dry very hot, so our clothes came back smaller.
I‘m aware that this is a usual risk when washing whilst traveling, but still..
So, overall an ok place, although definitely overpriced for...
