Hostel Calafate Viejo — Hotel in El Calafate

The staff is not very welcoming and you feel more like you're disturbing rather than anything else. The place is horrible... very simple, not cozy at all, very old... the bedroom was almost depressing. The bathroom was very bad. The water from the toilet kept running, we had some beetles in our shower and the whole bedroom/bathroom looked dirty... the kind of place where you feel dirtier after a shower. We had a very bad first impression, but in the end we spent 2 nights and slept well. That's because we were tired and we don't mind the noise, cause it was very noisy, mostly due to the staff having what there seems the rest of their family watching TV in the common area. honestly, it;s very pricy for what it offers... add a couple of pounds more and get smoething way better.||||The only good thing about the place is its location. Para comenzar, quisiera comentarles que no mantienen el precio acordado desde el principio. Me comuniqué con ellos en octubre, para pedir precio por habitación en febrero. Me comunicaron que la habitación para dos personas con baño privado salía $650 sin desayuno y $780 con desayuno. Elegimos la última opción y quisimos reservar. Nos dijeron que no tomaban reserva, que no nos preocupáramos porque nos mantenían el precio y nos reservaban la habitación. Que nos comuniquemos 20 días antes para confirmar.|Entonces 20 días antes escribimos y nos dijeron que el precio había cambiado a $800. Cuando llegamos al hostel, nos atendió Fabiana (creo que ese era su nombre) y nos informo que el precio era de $850 SIN DESAYUNO porque "se le complica" (palabras textuales). Al no tener otro lugar donde ir porque estaban todos los alojamientos llenos, decidimos quedarnos igual.||El primer día llegamos temprano y no podíamos acceder a la habitación, así que les dejamos las valijas y nos fuimos a una excursión que teníamos programada. Volvimos a las 20:30 hs con comida para cenar. Mientras cenábamos, Fabiana nos vino a decir que "la chica de la mañana" le DIO NUESTRA HABITACIÓN A OTRA PAREJA, por lo que no teníamos lugar donde dormir. Nos ofreció ir a otro lugar donde había conseguido a 3 cuadras, pero salía $1400 la noche y pretendía que nosotros paguemos ese valor. Al negarnos nos dijo: "Chicos, que quieren hacer? Yo estoy cansada!". Le dijimos que íbamos a ir al otro alojamiento, pero que solo íbamos a pagar los $850 que valía su hostel y que ella tenía que pagar la diferencia. Acepto y nos llevo con una camioneta hacia el otro lugar, pero como estaba apurada no pudimos terminar la cena y se la regalamos a otros huéspedes.||Al día siguiente volvimos y por suerte teníamos habitación. La habitación es pequeña (se accede a la cama matrimonial solo de un costado), pero limpia y en el baño hay agua caliente. Esta bien para ir solo a dormir, no para quedarse. De todas formas, el precio lo valía solo si hubiera traído desayuno incluido. En cuanto a la cocina, tienen horno, anafe, pava eléctrica y tostadora. ||Mi consejo es que por un poco más de plata pueden ir a otro alojamiento donde los traten con respeto (no como Fabiana nos trató a nosotros) y donde cumplan con lo que prometen. Vayan a un lugar donde tomen su reserva, sino les pueden cobrar cualquier...

The best hostel I have ever stayed in!

This is a very late review but I stayed at Hostel Calafate Viejo for 5 months during COVID in 2020 when the world was locked down. Fabiana and her family took in the other two people who were also there and me, and took care of it. Other hostels were kicking tourists out but Fabiana never even had that intention.

I spent everyday cooking and baking in the kitchen and hanging out in the garden. The hostel was always clean and had everything I could ever need. The location also couldn’t be better, on a quiet street but steps away from the supermarket and the main street.

I loved the hostel and Fabiana as well as her family!
