My stay last week was not completely terrible. The redeeming quality was my okay enough room - I managed to sleep fine and the shower was hot. However the Mercure Perth is just simply a hotel. No real character or vibe and nothing outstanding to note that really separates it from the rest. Noting this, I am leaving feedback so Mercure Perth know what they can improve on in order to make the guest experience more positive and hopefully make guests feel they wish to return to the property.
The service to start with was nearly non-existent. Every interaction I had felt transactional and in particular my check in. I arrived around 10pm after a long flight from Sydney for work and let me tell you - a smile and a polite hello goes a long way. I received neither from the lady at check in. Check in was rushed and felt like I was being read something off a script, and checking people in seemed to be more of a bother rather than attempting to do it effectively and properly welcoming the (paying) guest.
Throughout my stay, the few times I needed to ask a question or follow up on something, staff really didn’t seem to care and quite frankly didn’t seem like they wanted to be there, which is a shame. Don’t even try and call room service either (day or night). I tried several times and to no avail. I even called Reception one morning to see if they were able to transfer me over, however they were unable to as the room service phone was still engaged. When you called room service it would go straight to a dial-tone, like their phone had been left off the hook? Strange. Seems odd that the room service phone would be engaged for over an hour? Unfortunately that’s also lost profit there with those situations - as I went and made other arrangements for my meals.
The room itself was okay. Dated but spacious, and comfy enough bed. Although the hotel (rooms and lobby area etc) definitely needs a nice modern refresh. The lift dates are set to January 2000 which seems very fitting considering the decor. The breakfast buffet is $32 - blanket price, no continental option, only machine coffee on offer. For this price (and one so high) you would want to make sure that the buffet selection is always fully stocked, food is hot, fruit is fresh, drinkable coffee, and an overall good selection on offer. The buffet was lacking in all aforementioned areas and is definitely not worth $32 so I would advise to steer clear and go to one of the many cafes near by for drinkable coffee and food warmer than lukewarm.
I was also doubly charged after I paid with my own Visa the one morning I decided to dine in for breakfast. On check out there was a charge against my room for breakfast, which the gentleman on the desk kindly voided after I explained the situation. The morning I went for breakfast, the hostess asked for my room number on arrival which she crossed off a printed list. However, I’m unsure why a breakfast was also charged back to my room after I had already paid by card? Are they crossing people off the list and charging them anyway, not noting if they had already paid? Makes me wonder how many times that may have happened to somebody else.
Overall, a below average experience that left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Would I go back? Probably not. Will I recommend to other colleagues to stay here?...
Read moreI will preface that I'm an Accor Vacation Club and Accor Plus member. I arrived Sunday afternoon and was given a complimentary upgrade. Which I thought was lovely. My room was located on the 13th floor. The room was dated and the carpet was stained. There was shaving hairs on the wall of the shower. The curtains didn't close all the way. There seemed to be a whole section missing. Anyway, the first night went relatively smoothly as I was so tired. Second night still tired so put up with the noise coming from the roof. Sounded like a pump pushing water through pipes. I then was woken up the next night but went with it. Next night, I went to have a bath after working all day and having sore feet. The bath plug didn't fit in the bath. I rang and asked if they could bring me one. A lady came up with an assortment, but none fit. I showed the lady the lack of curtains and she said she'd get that fixed. I also noticed my dirty face washer from the day before still in the soap holder. And the hairs still in the shower. That night the noise woke me up several times. Went to work in the morning and approached the front desk after work. I was told that they can get a sheet to put on the window if I like. The front desk person said there was no note about my missing curtain issue but I had a new bath plug. I was also told that he can't do anything about the noise, what did I want him to do? I was offered another room. I took the offer as I needed to be able to sleep. I went up and packed all my things and made the move down to floor 11. I get there and the key didn't work. I then went back down to reception. The same gentleman told me it should, which I agree that it should. He then told me that the door handle is opposite and to pull it up and that he'd forgotten to tell me this. So off I go again and finish moving all my belongings. This room is much nicer and feels like an actual upgrade. In fact, the gentleman on the front desk said to me that this room is an actual upgrade. I checked that I'd taken all my things from floor 13. The face washer still in the soap holder and the shaving hairs, that belong to someone else, still in the shower. I went back down and told the front desk gentleman about the cleaning issues. His comment was that he doesn't control the cleaners. I did say that he has a duty to give feedback to them. Overall, I would not stay here again, nor would I recommend anyone stay at the Mercure. Happy to pick up a conversation with someone who can make a...
Read moreWe were placed in Mercure Perth by Discovery Tours. The Mercure is falling to bits and not worth the money. We recommend requesting another hotel if travelling by tour.
Our room, number 934, had soaking wet carpet outside the door. Also, a big swathe of paint had lifted off and was flapping, about the size of a tea tray, behind the entry door and adjacent to the bathroom.
The pool had broken boards surrounding it which lifted up when trodden upon. Strangely, we all just avoided that area but there was no warning and kids were playing.
The buffet coffee machine was broken and only Nescafe available for first few days, plus the commercial toaster had broken too. Quite sad to see them under their black shrouds. There was only side plates for food which could barely hold a fried egg, no main dinner plates, so hot buffet was hilarious watching big men trying to get more than two items on a plate.
There is no restaurant, just a small cafe with street access, worn tables, screaming kids and uninspiring food. We had thought to go there one night but one glance was enough - and the dull menu was the same as room service.
It all became very Fawlty Towers when we returned from a very long return day trip to Margaret River. Rang up room service to order from late night menu where a series of amusing questions established nothing available but toasties with crisps (go figure??) (at $18!) . Could not get a glass of wine, bar closed, but must buy a bottle. Food arrived, midget toastie from two small squares of white bread, no salad - no crisps (remember we paid 2 x $18 + $5 delivery = $41 for this delight). Rang up to find out what had happened, oops was reply. They went to get some crisps, rang back, none left! Maybe a relief, who wants a bag of smiths chips with a toastie - $5 off.
Topping it off was that they never seemed to expect my partner and I to be sharing a room even though our booking was quite clear. - one set of knife and fork for example with a room service meal - mmm I must have been hungry wanting two mains. But looking on the bright side, room service did get some exercise. In general, the staff were trying to cope but the circumstances were just too much for them.
We were there to enjoy perth, which we did, and not to complain and then get stuck in a loop so we just laughed it off. In the end, we are just sad we did not get to meet Basil and Sybil, because they must have been there somewhere. In future, we will make all attempts to avoid staying at the...
