Portland is a historic town on the west coast of Victoria. A friendly place with a good community. Macs Hotel/Quality hotel Bentinck was built in 1800s and is an impressive blue stone building with ornate balconies overlooking the water. The hotel is being constantly restored by its owners to give you the feel that you have stepped back in time yet have all the comforts of today. Located right in the middle of town and only across the road from the harbour makes it easy to get around on foot. There is free off street parking in the hotel which could be limited during peak times. On arriving we were greeted by Rob he was very friendly and helpful. Check in was simple as we had booked on line as Choice hotels members so we can get discounts and points. (Worth the free membership). Unfortunately the only downfall is the rooms are upstairs so this will challenge some. I have a bad knee but was able to navigate the stairs to the first level to our suite for the night. There is a variety of room choices at different price levels to satisfy most travellers. We have treated ourselves this visit to a King Spa Suite room 27 midweek stay was very reasonable rate and value for money especially when you factor in free breakfast for two. The room was bright and spacious with huge windows and water views. There was a gorgeous Chesterfield lounge and a little dining table positioned right in front of the bay windows. The room was spotless and the decor was spot on for a period hotel. A stocked minibar was concealed in free standing cabinetry with tea, coffee, hot chocolate making facilities and the Tim Tams were a nice touch. A large flat ace TV and free wifi are the reminders that it is 2021. The bed so comfortable with crisp white linen and good pillow choices. Blockout Drapes darkened the room for a good nights sleep. The bathroom had a separate walk-in shower as well as the corner spa and was well appointed. We could have ordered dinner and had it in our room but went down stairs to the restaurant for a drink and a great meal off the large menu instead. Downstairs is the main bar, outdoor balcony bars and covered street bar if your into people watching like us. A breakfast dining room serves a continental buffet breakfast which is included in the room price or you have the option to pay extra for full cooked breakfast. Check out was quick and easy Deb on Reception was a delight We had a wonderful midweek stay here and will be returning customers. Highly recommend it was a great experience.

Can’t fault this gorgeous hotel. It felt like I’ve travelled back in time. The management did well in maintaining the hotel well. Despite being heritage listed building (aka old) didn’t had any yucky moments in the room. Not a single hair in the bathroom and all facilities within the room are perfectly working fine. Bed sheets are in white which I loved the most. Bath had jets working too! Intercom and hair dryer intact. Total blockout when sleeping so you don’t get disturbed but can hear the heavy rev ups outside but not an issue. Love the dinette and large screen tv. Private parking at the back of the hotel for free. Bar and restaurant downstairs. Light continental breakfast included which needs to refill fast. Our room was overlooking the marina and walk to the shops and parks. Could also walk to the jetty for fishing. 12 min drive to Cape Nelson. Reception was very helpful and nice. Left my phone on the dining table at the restaurant and came back to me with no hassle. Booked for 2 rooms and refunded me the excess since the other room was smaller, couldn’t have known about it if the receptionist had not explained. All hotels should be like this and I have no hesitation recommending this place to friends.

Unfortunately not as it looked online. Nice enough place however the upkeep in not being maintained. I couldn't work out why the carpet in my room (9) felt damp under foot? In the morning I could see why - it was filthy! (Photos don't do it justice). Also the seat outside was covered in weeks of dust and leaves were inside the room from the accumulation outside the door. I couldn't stir my coffee as no tea spoon and of course could not sit on the chair without covering my backside in dust. The water out if the tap was almost undrinkable due to the taste of chlorine, so I dived for the bottle of water in the room. To my surprised each bottle cost $350 - 2 were in the room. Pretty rich seeing the tap water is horrible. The local IGA got my business. Overall I ended up very dissapointed, I had just come from Hamilton where I stayed at a brilliant motel which got 5 start as they got the basics spot on - Cheaper, clean, fresh, and two bottles of water complimentary and brilliant service! Nothing from the "Quality" Hotel Bentinck accept a receipt. I Suggests to stay in the main building/Hotel instead. Will not be coming back next time.

without doubt this is the BEST place to stay in Portland AND the BEST place for meals. Locals all call it the MAC hotel. I nearly could not find it as I was looking for a " hotel Bentinck". Thank goodness the taxi driver - excellent and well informed and originally from Scotland - was well aware of the correct place I had prebooked after I described what I had read about the said hotel. On day two I realised I had not packed a warm enough cardigan or jumper. A well informed taxi driver found me a lovely shop where I was able to find a charming soft jumper and a similarly soft and warm cardigan. The same taxi driver took me on a tour of Portland at my request and his knowledge of Portland was extensive. I was able to visit the great annual display of Dahlias on the Saturday and the Sunday - .created by the Portland Dahlia society. It was the best Dahlia show I have ever attended in Australia - very well run in an airy big hall with a sale of dahlia flower stems in bloom and potted dahlias for sale. My room at the MAC hotel was gorgeous with sea views and one wall of bluestone in both bedroom and bathroom. Restaurant was full every night and no wonder - food and service perfect in every way. Michael in the restaurant was excellent - with good advice and a great ambassador for Portland. Lovely housekeeping staff at the MAC were very kind, professional and pleasant and discreetly kept my room spotless - every time I returned to the MAC I found my room perfect. I had plenty of hanging space for clothing. Bed was perfect as was the temperature in my room. very nice writing paper and envelopes in a drawer in my room. Also well stocked fridge and lovely toiletries in bathroom. I looked around the town during several walks and MAC hotel was clearly the STAR venue - coupled with good advice from the front desk and the two well informed taxi drivers - so I was able to discover far more than if I had not been able to hear their wisdom and...

THE GOOD||||Nice rooms, spacious and great bed. Nice tv||||THE BAD||No microwave. I get it. You want people to use your restaurant or room service. But someone who uses a microwave will generally not use your restaurant||||THE UGLY||Lost property & service||||I forgot an item and called 2 days later. Was told it had been handed in, person could however, not locate it. And from there it just became a revolving door with me calling and the same person giving me excuses. Eventually after 4 phone calls from me the item misteriously appeared and free postage was offered to me. However, 2 weeks later it still had not arrived.||||Called for the 5th time and was assured it had been sent the day after we spoke previously. When I asked the person to check the following day with housekeeping the excuses started again. I was told she was not working the next couple of days and when I called the following day, who answered the phone? You guessed it.||||At no time was an effort made to get back to me and after the first call I got this feeling the item would never return!!||||What was my expectation? Room attendant handed the item in on Thursday morning. Pick up the phone and call the guest. I had checked out but was working in Portland till 4pm. I could have picked it up.||||Poor service. First time my business used this hotel and...
