Booked for 6 people at 7pm on a Thursday and when we arrived (on time) I had just been told my client (2 out of 6 of us) were not going to join us. After informing the waitstaff, I got told that we should called ahead to let them know as they turned people away tonight. After I apologised, she doubled down, berating me and saying that she had turned multiple people away tonight for US (mentioned multiple times). Now there was not one, or two, or three but FIVE tables of 2 empty behind our group and remained that way from 7pm to kitchen closure at 9pm. So what was this mystery group that we denied entry? Who did she turn away for the sake of my two guests? A party of 16? Which they could not have sat anyway? A group earlier in the evening which has nothing to do with us? In the time we were there, all 5 tables sat empty for the entire time. More embarrassingly, the kitchen than made a mistake and didn't bring out of my guests meals until all the others has finished our meals. So to reprimand me for only 4 out of my 6 guests eating and drinking multiple beers and wine (we still spent $380, with her constantly trying to upsell), when there was empty tables and the service and kitchen was sub-par made for a pretty lame experience and I won't bother recommending or returning.

Having driven quite a distance from Hamilton Victoria to explore Portland, we were actually lucky to get a seat for a late lunch. Time kind of ran away from us as we did a bit of sightseeing. After a quick bit of phone R&D, we called the Clock by the Bay with literally 10 minutes before closing. But the kind lady told us to come on down and we did. I'm so glad they let us in. The food was delicious! The Clock by the Bay is a really pretty location on the corner of Cliff Street and Bentinck Street, overlooking the waters of the Bass Straight. It was the town's former Post Office built with a rusticated stone exterior and big, imposing sash windows. A side garden area provided a fresco seating. On the inside, it had a really comforting, neutral modern feeling with lots of space. The late afternoon was chilly, but we sat by one of the windows which was warming, if not too bright. Luckily one of the waitstaff came quickly to the rescue and lowered the blinds. I opted for the Prawn and Squid Hotpot with stir fried prawns and squid, leeks, garlic, chilli, tomato, garlic, spinach, pearl cous cous and lemon broth, accompanied with grilled house loaf. Perfect for a cold day.

Top nosh with lovely vibe and views... OK this little charmer gets a big nod from us. If you follow our few reviews you will see we only offer a review of it's an extremely good or perhaps really poor experience. Hard working wait person, friendly and professional. Food a knock out with carefully prepared layers of more-ish flavour. The Wagyu Arancini balls were alone worth a drive from afar, seriously! Simple mains such hot perfectly cooked prawns with leaks, chilli... quality pasta... Mmmm, bottle of NZ Sauv Blanc... Totally reinventing the lemon meringue pie with a panna cotta hidden joy was a gold finish. Well done chef of the hour, 'Mel' and team Clock. We will look you up when we breeze through your beautiful town again.

Trina (Head front of House) has been rude to me for the last time. I left without ordering a meal and drink. I'm a local and regularly enjoy going to Clock by the Bay, this building is full of ambiance, the food is amazing - credit to chief, the blonde haired waitress is lovely, so welcoming and attentive. That's where the positive comments stop, Trina is incredibly rude with an unprofessional attitude. I'm a regular and almost always sit at the same table, this particular time I was meeting with my daughter, we chose from the menu and l went to the front counter to order, no welcome greetings (this isn't unusual from her). The first thing I get asked is what's your table number, l apologize explained that l forgot to look but it's the very first table. Well l've never been so embarrassed and rudely spoken to, l was told to go back and look and then Trina proceeded to lecture me about the importance of knowing the table number (there was a table of 4 people) and my table of two...... not that busy. I stood listening to this verbal, hand gesture lecture, and then I thought......hang on, this is her restaurant she must (should) know the table number and said this to her. Again I got the lecture yes she does but it's up to me to also know. The food is amazing but the service from Trina is disgusting especially as she is head of front house. She has been rude to me before while I have been a paying customer. This time I wasn't expecting her rude attitude and chose to go elsewhere where we were...

I booked a table for dinner for us and when we got there the head front of house was rude as we had booked for one more person than could come (they cancelled at last minute) - she said we should of rung as she had turned people away but went in to say “how the big long table had booked for half of the people but it had doubled which she accomodated). We felt uncomfortable with this comment but then it got worse. The head of house then told us there were dishes not available due to the larger booking - which when we were told I explained that was the only dish I could eat due to being allergic to meat, seafood, chicken and mushrooms -and the head of house replied “YOUR LIFE SUCKS” and went of to say that she was allergic to fruit but mine was worse. She then said “haven’t you looked at the menu online “ quite aggressively and when I explained we had and I had the gnocchi before and that’s why we came there - she made my two friends and myself very uncomfortable and decided we would go elsewhere for dinner and this made her make further unprofessional remarks about how she turned away a $400 table and that she was disappointed in us - we all felt like we literally couldn’t leave and she kept making comments while we left. I have eaten here numerous times before and the food is amazing but to be told “my life sucks” because I can’t eat meat, made me feel attacked and offended. It’s such a shame as the food is amazing and credit to the chef but I won’t be...

Stopped by this restaurant on a day outing from Melbourne. Was greeted by the front of house lady, short blonde hair with glasses, whom was blunt from the moment we walked in the door. Was then told to find a seat anywhere that didnt have a "name" on it. My partner & i proceeded to sit at a 4person table in the window so we could see the view of the water, first time in Portland. The same lady came along and told us we couldnt sit there and to move to a two person table. The restaurant was not busy, with many empty tables! At this moment we decided we were not going to eat here, due to her arrogance and lack of customer service but needed a coffee. I went up to the bar to order coffee, clear and straight to the point with my coffee order the same lady got huffy i wasnt ordering food, and then got annoyed when i was clear about 1small latte and 1large latte. The coffee was terrible and the whole experience was just a shambles. I would have not spent a cent here if it wasnt for the fact we had driven long distance. Its such a shame, considering we love trying new restaurants, seeing new towns and for such a small town where you would rely on the visitors this had left us both with a bad taste in our mouth just like their coffee.

We actually drove to Port Fairy and enjoyed amazing customer service and food, that...
