I've stayed in many 3-star hotels in 4 different countries over the past 6 weeks and I can say that Hotel Gloria in La Paz need to do better. Most budget travelers aren't expecting luxury but there are some bare minimums that need to be met, and hot water and cleanliness are at the top of the list. I'm truly shocked by the number of hotels that fail to provide the former. Let's review pros and cons for this hotel.
Pros: Heated room including a heating element in the floor (albeit overly aggressive at times). Friendly staff. Decent breakfast, but nothing to write home about. Housekeeping is first rate. Centrally located.
Cons: Hot water is nonexistant at all hours of the day and night. Don't hope for lukewarm water either. It's not gonna happen. I hope you like cold showers! No window screens. Electric outlets are stripped out. Good luck charging your electronic devices! No air conditioning. Most of the enamel is missing from the bath tub. HUGE cracks in the walls. No fire detector in the room. (Is that even legal?) Wifi signal drops out frequently and only provides ~6 mbps when connected. Street noise is excessive to the point of being unable to sleep, especially if you crack a window for air. Bed sheets are rough and starchy with an overwhelming smell of bleach.
I recommend looking elsewhere for accommodations...
Read moreDO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE! They are liars and cheaters. We dropped off our clothes to be washed and the guy weighed it and told us is was 4kg worth of clothes. We trusted them but when we took it home and weighed it, it was only 2kg. They charge 12b per kilo, which I found out later to be very expensive. My husband got back one of his pants with a big rip and can't wear them again. We brought it back the next day and there was another receptionist who told us he was new and didn't know the other older man we dealt with and there's nothing he can do about the pants as it was most likely the machine's fault. We also brought our clothes in a nice bag and they gave us back a plastic bag and now noone will tell us where the bag is. Our first time in Bolivia and this place has opened up our eyes about some of the cheats of scams found in this country. Very...
Read moreWe arrived here after a long week in Lima and Cusco AirBnB accommodations. It has been a pleasure staying here, so far....||Mattress excellent, CPUs hit water with good pressure in shower, bathroom immaculate, staff at reception spoke flawless English and were super helpful. Tom if quiet with minimal traffic noise. Plaza Murillo with the presidential palace and House of Congress is 5 minutes away, Plaza Mayor 5 minutes in the opposite direction. Witches Market is 15 minutes walk.||Excellent high end restaurants within walking distance as also a super food court serving a variety of Bolivian dishes at 1/3rd the price of the expensive restaurants. Will try the hotel buffet breakfast tomorrow.||Have no hesitation in recommending this hotel, even at the US$61 per night...
