Although not in the very best location for the centre of Santiago, this little property really is a gem and well worth seeking out. It's not really in the heart of the Barrio Bellavista either, but close enough to everything by a relatively brisk walk. You can get downtown in about 30 minutes on foot and there's nowhere really worth seeing that isn't within striking distance.||||The property is in the shadow of a fairly huge hospital, but is surrounded by housing and is thus very quiet. There was some construction noise during the day in July 2017, but it was unobtrusive and never started before 10:00AM. There's little or no passing traffic to disturb guests at all.||||The rooms are small and basic, but very recently decorated and the quaintness of the building has been preserved with very nice, polished floorboards. Santiago isn't exactly the warmest place to visit in South American winter, but the aircon doubles as a heater and warms the room up to 32C very quickly. The bathroom has a shower stall (no tub) which offers very hot, good water pressure. There's soap and shampoo provided, but the towels are not changed every day. In fact, the rather worn, tired towels could do with replacing altogether. If you throw your towel on the floor in the morning, it will be picked up and hung up for you to use again.||||The bed was very comfortable and the sheets clean and fresh. There are individual reading lights which you don't always find in small hotels. There's a closet and a chair, but no desk and nowhere really to put your bags. There's a flat screen TV, but I never turned it on. Wifi is excellent anywhere in the property and comes free.||||The restaurant offers a narrow selection of breakfast items, but all is good enough. Eggs are cooked to order and there's toast, but all other food items are cold - cheese, meats, fruit cocktail, yogurt, pastries, cereal. All of good quality. During the day, the restaurant gets very busy for lunch for outside patrons and there's a nice outside patio to dine.||||The staff are very friendly and helpful, although the English spoken is a bit hit and miss. Rooms are cleaned daily and they do a good job all round. Helpful with suggestions of things to do and there's a ton of tourist brochures available. The desk is maintained 24/7 and you need to be buzzed in and out even though I never worried for a moment about the neighbourhood. ||||Great rates for a very comfortable stay in a quiet location, close enough to everything to make it...
Read moreThis old boarding-style house had some positives and some negatives - unfortunately we expected a mid-hotel experience which we did not receive. This is simply a basic hotel/hostel/b&b.||Pros:|- a nice neighbourhood on the very outskirts of Bella Vista. Descent location.|- the area is safe and within a brisk and somewhat lengthy walking distance to the City Centre (30 minutes), Bella Vista (10 to 15 minutes), Funicular (15 minutes). In a residential area in the heart of major hospital, clinics, universities and pharmacies. |- the staff are very friendly and helpful. They made arrangements for a shuttle to the coast that cost at least half of what we could find.|- although we didn’t eat the lunch, it was nice to see the opportunity to eat in if you wish. You will find restaurants (both food & water) to be super expensive in Chile. Stick with the fresh fruit and vegetables you can buy from vendors. Also, there is a deli with wine and other items only 3 blocks down on BellaVista Street. |- 5 minutes walk to a Starbucks. ||Mediocre:|- breakfast is basic. A cooked egg choice, sliced salami/ham, cheese, bread. Coffee was good.|- the tv had both English & Spanish channels although the tv is miniature (about the size of a laptop).|- nice outdoor patio area but chairs are well worn. ||Poor:|- under lovely clean sheets and pillow cases are stained and well worn duvets and pillows. I’m not sure how often they are laundered - not often it appears. |- bathrooms although small are equipped with a small stand up shower and toilet dispensers right over the toilet so you hit it every time you sit down.|- mattresses that are very old and very very soft. New mattresses are definitely in order |- mini fridge that sits beside the bed and hums off & on all night long.|- signage on walls and interior room doors that say no smoking, no paper products in toilet, etc. Just tacky|- furnishings the quality of a dorm room.||All in all, a mediocre experience. The Hotel Don worked for our needs which is a positive but I would not recommend if you are looking for something...
Mejor lugar no pudimos haber elegido!! Gracias amigos de Hotel Don Santiago!! Éxitos, Dios...
