Best hostel experience in my life. Actually much better than in many hotels I've been to.
I felt like at home. Monica and Andres create a fantastic atmosphere and make sure that you feel comfortable and you have everything you need. Also all other people from the staff are super friendly and helpful.
The place is super clean - the rooms, bathrooms kitchen, dining area - everything is cleaned carefully every day. Spotless!
I absolutely loved the big kitchen/dining/living area where you could sit and relax, either alone or hanging out with other travellers.
Breakfast - huge positive surprise. Usually in other hostels there is very little food served from late'ish morning for 2 hours. In El Patagonico you can eat the breakfast from 5am (!) till 10am, so if you're planning to go to Torres del Paine with the earliest bus, you'll still have plenty of time to eat your breakfast. There's a lot of bread you can toast, different marmelades, honey, some cheese to spread, cookies, cake etc. Coffee, tea, milk - all there. Well, you could complain there is no ham or fresh fruits, but remember it's a hostel (and still I was much happier with the breakfast than in a 3 - star hotel in San Francisco). I loved my slow mornings over there.
Not to mention that you can cook or bake whatever you want - you have all the amenities you'd like - stove, microwave, oil, spices etc.
Very comfy beds with a power socket and a small lamp next to each bed (great for charging your phone in the night). In general you have lots of power sockets all over the hostel. And a fantastic Wi-Fi everywhere!
I won't describe other stuff in details, like the laptop free to use, wii, cardboard games... It was way beyond any expectations.
I've spent almost a week at El Patagonico. I really felt like at home. With absolutely no doubts I will choose Monica's and Andres' hostel if I ever come back to Puerto Natales. This hostel is actually one of the reason why I'd like...
Read moreHostel is great, but I wanted to write a review of the camping equipment Patagonico has because there's not much info.
We did the O-trek right at the very end of the season (late March). We rented: 3-man tent, bag, cooking equipment, sleeping bags, mats.
Patagonico's prices are BY FAR the cheapest we found in PN. If you don't have much budget you can save a lot by renting from Pata.
Tent. First day we had heavy winds and one of the corners collapsed in a lot. Was worried it'd snap. Got pretty annoying with it going in my face. However it didn't break and the tent performs well in rain and snow. It's possibly a bit big for the O-trek in terms of size and weight. It's pretty heavy.
Sleeping bags: rated for -15C but not sure I believe that. We had some cold nights and were still cold in four/five layers. Quite heavy too, and seemed quite old.
Mat: Didn't offer much comfort but at least didn't weigh much.
Cooking: cooking setup is rickety and you will be jealous of some of the space-age seeming stoves you'll see on the trek. The pot is a big dented tin thing, but you can put other stuff in it and ultimately we were able to cook fine. Plastic plates and cheap cutlery included were just about adequate.
Bag: Big heavy thing (65+10L), but pretty comfortable to wear. Not convinced there's that much difference in experience between carrying 15 and 20kgs on the hips. Felt tough.
Overall the cost of cheapness is weight and and , in my view, tolerable...
Read moreI write this review after staying with Andreas and Monica in December 2022 for a few nights between my trek of Torres Del Paine.
After having a problem with paying for my reservation as my Chilean PDI they calmly allowed me a few days to sort it out at a local police station. This small token meant the world to me in a world full of unsympathetic people. The breakfast every morning was lovely and thank you for allowing me to leave my bags at your hostel while I went off for the week to trek in Torres Del Paine. Also I miss your lovely cats next door at your residence that you kindly let me say hello to!
If you are reading this Andreas and Monica I just want you to know you are 2 of the nicest people I ever met. And your kindness in this world has not been forgotten by me. People like you are what makes the world a better place. The hostel is ran for their love of helping people not financial gain and the experience truly shows. Muchas gracias mis amigos! Owen...
