I can't even call that a hostel. This is a hotel with no signage outside, the poor taxi driver had to go in circles to know where to drop me and of course the meter was going. Then he decided to drop me in front of a mall and l got the feeling I was left stranded. Went through a corridor, met a concierge who speaks Chinese only, I showed him the address of the hotel in Chinese and with his fingers he pointed level two. Went up in the elevator, no hotel up there and down again and using sign language to try to tell him there is no Fortune hotel there. Of course he could not help me any longer. Tried to get the attention of a few passers-by by showing then the Chinese hotel address, one guy tried to explain to me, again in sign language, that it is number 5 not 2. Back in the elevator, damn it, but there is no number 5. Went down and tried to get help from other passers-by, then a guy with some English told me, of the two elevators, the right one is for even numbers, the left one is for odd numbers. Ok went up again and finally saw the reception of Fortune hotel. The guy at the reception does not speak any English at all. He got me to fill in a form with all my details and gave me a key and showed me my room. Room quite small to be expected, but when I opened the toilet door, I was a bit shocked, but where is the shower? In the toilet, there is a hose, so this is what you are supposed to shower yourself with? No way. It reminds me of the hose that you find in those Asian Squat toilets. In some hotels they take money from your credit card at check-in and in others they do it when you check out. My first night I was sleeping and at 11 pm someone was knocking quiet hard at my door and when I opened, I saw the Chinese guy I met at the reception, he kept shouting, money, money, money. Then I figured out, he wanted me to pay now. Again with sign language, I tried to make him understand, I am sleeping, I will come at the reception in the morning. Most employees there, because of their lack of English, when they speak to you, they shout at you in Chinese, not in a friendly tone, maybe they think you will understand Chinese if they shout. My second night, I woke up around 5 am to drink some water, and had a strange smell near my pillow, I turned the lights on and saw a bed bug crawling. I immediately pulled the pillow case out, just in case there could be more inside, I was horrified, this is the dirtiest pillow I have ever seen, it is so disgusting to imagine I slept on that filth. After a 12+ hours flight from Vancouver, to avoid a 9+ hours layover at Hongkong airport, I wanted to spend two nights in Hongkong to rest and recover before heading back to Perth. Frankly, now that I know what I was offered, I would not have stayed at this place...
Read moreI arrived at HK past midnight so the only transport available is either the premium buses or the cheap fare buses (N21 or N23). I took the N21 costing HK$23(fixed price) per pax. 27 stops from T1/T2 and alight at Bank Center. Thanks to Google map for all the info. While in the bus there's no need to worry about where you are coz the bus display every INFO "LIVE" including the no. of stops with both Chinese and English and with announcements in both languages too. Lots of rooms space for your luggages in the bus too. Upon arriving at the location, finding this hotel is challenging especially in the middle of the night and when you don't speak Cantonese. According to Google map it takes 1 min but I took more than 20. Read on and you will know why. Firstly, Google map is not showing me the exact location of my position. For example, I've reached Wing Wah Building but I'm shown a spot across the road on my hand phone. So when you are looking for Fortune hotel REMEMBER to look for Wing Wah Building instead. Hotel is located at 5th level of Wing Wah Building. Do note that there are many other hotels and the local residents in this building. Fortune is on 5th level. When out of the service lift its on your right. The impression of the hotel is not like those of 3 or 5 stars hotel so don't be shocked when you enter the small room. In it a super single bed (meant for 2 pax) which is uncomfortable for 2 persons. An attached toilet is squeezed into the room leaving little walking space and your luggage bags. Further, room is not sound proof. Voices and noises can be heard from outside the room. So you are also not spared from the noise coming from the room next to you. Room is clean but every fixtures from air conditioning unit to water heater looks old but functioning well except the noisy exhaust fan up the ceiling. Honestly, I can't bring myself to call it a hotel. It's actually a GUEST HOUSE. The building is big and service lifts are shared by local residents in this 10 storey building. Do not to use the stairs least you will be put off by the "slumps" thrown on every levels. So when out of your room, just walk within the perimeter between your room and the service lift and you will be fine. 3 good points about this hotel. It's within 5 minutes walk to Mongkok MTR, hotel is located in the heart of the popular "Ladies market" and the friendly staff who doesn't speak a single word of English. My 2 cents worth of advice, if you decide to stay in a fairly cheap hotel like Fortune, go for a room equipped with twin beds...
Read moreWe booked the family room for 5 people. I traveled to HK few times already so I know for a fact that the rooms are usually tiny. To my delight, the room is more spacious than I expected. The staff are also accommodating though they can barely speak English. The building is a bit old and only has 2 lifts (1 for odd & 1 for even floors). The downside of our stay is that only 1 lift was working (and it was the one that goes to even-numbered floors). The hostel is in Level 5 so we had to go to Level 6 and take the stairs down to Level 5. Just imagine we had to carry our bulky luggage bags 1 floor down during check-in & check-out which is a bit cumbersome specially for my old parents.||||The room is clean and has basic toiletries. It also has kettle and glasses that you can use if you want to make your own coffee/tea. The beds are comfy and the sheets are clean. They also clean the room daily.||||The place is near Mongkok station (Exit E2) and there are shops and food stalls nearby. It's a bit noisy until 2-3am coz the building is by the roadside. If you don't mind these little inconvenient things, then this place is worth trying. After all, Hongkong is quite an expensive place to stay but it's always fun to shop, specially for...
