Checked into the the Sloth backpacker hostel last min , due to unexpected travel delays. But I am glad I checked into the sloth backpacker hostel. I was able to get a private room for a reasonable price. The receptionist Daniel was extremely kind . I explained to him my unexpected situation .. I was lost , no iPhone charger, missed my returning bus back to San Jose, and daylight was slowly diminishing .Yet Daniel he went above and beyond and offered me an iPhone charger , details about the next bus, and activities to do the next day. His father even helped me schedule a personal pick up bus for the daytime activities. He also mentioned a complimentary breakfast the next day , brought clean towels to my room. The private twin bedroom was clean and well kept.The hostel felt like a family home. The noise level of the room was not bad at all. In the morning when I woke I went down stairs for the complimentary breakfast. His father explained the breakfast is only offered complimentary for a higher paid price on the rooms. Yet I explained to him my situation and offered me breakfast anyways. He offered me fresh fruits and tea. His daughter kindly asked if I wanted eggs and toast . It caught be off guard of how much hospitality these people had. I come from the US and I never felt like I was in a family home when I rented rooms in a hostel. The Backpackers sloth employees really go above and beyond for their customers and help create a welcoming environment . Even when I checked out of the hostel the employees allowed me to come back to use their iPhone charger again. In addition The kind receptionist also reminded me when my bus was going to arrive the next day , 20 min prior. My whole experience staying here exceeded my expectations of a hostel . All the employees here are hard workers and truly care about the wellbeing and comfort of their customers. If I am ever in Monteverde again I will definitely come back here . I would recommend this hostel to anyone who wants a comfortable place to stay on a budget or not . This place is well priced for what they are worth ,honestly surprised they aren't charging more . Don’t usually do reviews but I know it really helps people in the tourist industry so here it goes: Amazing service and hospitality :) I forget his name, but the young man working at Sloth Hostel is extremely kind and was there for anything I needed. He made me delicious breakfasts! FOR FREE! There’s also free coffee/coffee maker, dishes, a freezer/fridge in the kitchen (which is open for a fairly long time during the day). I had a large room with bunk beds all to myself and blankets, it was clean. Bathroom has a great shower with hot water and great water pressure. The hostel obviously has the perfect location in MV, it’s right in the middle of everything so you can walk where ever u want.

ONE THING however, which explains the 3 stars for the room: there were hundreds of mosquitoes in the room, and I could not get away from them no matter what i did. so I ended up having to sleep in my car. This is due to the upper window slots (?) being open which you can’t close all the way (there’s still little gaps). The mosquitoes are attracted to heat and CO2 and can easily navigate into the room. I’ve been in situations with a lot of mosquitoes and am used to them, but this was crazy, so many that even I couldn’t bear it. This could easily be fixed, which I highly recommend the owners to do if possible. I ended up with bites all over my body from head to toe.

The bad reviews are from stuck up people who are used to 5 star hotels and fancy rich people resorts. This is a cheap and homely hostel for people who don’t need fancy things to be happy. Yes, you need cash to pay so bring colones in cash if you want...

Got scammed, extremely unfriendly reception and boss We arrived and asked the reception guy for the price of a room, he gave a price and we figured out we could have a discount through Hostelworld. Before booking in the app, I asked if indeed the room was for 2 people, he confirmed and I booked. After that he told me the reservation was for 1 person and that we had to pay 12 extra dollars. We asked they if we could cancel, if we could find an arrangement, or anything. They said no to all our requests, they didn't propose to call Hostelworld, they were just asking more money than initially and didn't consider at all the misunderstanding that just happened. The boss didn't care at all about the situation. Later on they ask extra money on top for the towels (room is already 45$). And after our stay, they cancelled booking so they could since the beginning Kitchen miss a lot of tools. Noisy place. Definitely the worst experience after more than a month spent in...
