The first star is for the staff who are lovely. The second star is for the very pretty garden. But the hotel itself is not at all pleasant. The bedding is lumpy and uncomfortable. The bathrooms are very basic. The basin was coming away from the wall in the first room we had plus you have to put used toilet paper in the bin but the bin didn’t have a lid! Also the glass panes were coming out of the louvred windows with sharp glass edges protruding from the frame. You can hear everything in the neighbouring rooms. There is no fridge, kettle, safe or even sufficient spaces to put your luggage down. Not to mention no wardrobes although there are hooks to hang your clothes on! There are very few places to simply sit out. Some small tables and chairs in the garden and we dragged our bedroom chairs out to sit on the patio. No bar, café or restaurant- save for during breakfast which is basic (although tasty!). You can’t even get a cup of coffee unless you pay for a filter coffee. There is nothing to do and the electrics are so fitful that, as soon as it got dark, we just ate in the town then came back and went to bed. There was only one side light and that was too dim to read by unless you were right next to it. The plumbing gurgled all night and we only had one pillow each so we’re really unhappy after one night. We did get more pillows when we asked.
Suffice to say I’d give this...
Read moreWe stayed in three Costa Rican Hotels. La Pradera in La Fortuna was the best. This was the worst. My cell phone would not work in Costa Rica, and I was there with a friend who was on chemo. There were no phones. There was a TV, that did not work. They blamed it on the fact that we did not have a remote, but then gave us a remote with dead batteries. They have a restaurant, but the restaurant is only open for 2 hours for a complementary breakfast, that had almost nothing. I am not a complainer, because I want good people to succeed, but we had a brochure from a company that this hotel didn't display. They took it from me, and put it in a drawer, unit I asked for it back. He arranged a cab that charged 7$, and gave us his card for the return. Thank god I lost the card, because when the company who's brochure, the hotel tried to make go away arranged a cab, he charged 4$. We walked downtown for dinner one night. My friend had looked up restaurants, we wrote down restaurants that had food that she could eat. The hotel told us that nearly all of them were closed. Again, I think they get money for referring people. We went to the first, an expensive place he said was open. When we were leaving we passed all of the OPEN places we had been told...
Read moreWe booked this hotel because we didn't have a car and wanted a hotel that was walking distance to town. It's not right in the center but it's about a ten minute walk into town so not too bad.||||Generally though, it's okay for the money but not somewhere I'd recommend. Here's why:||||Service: Reception tries to be helpful but they really aren't. I asked them which company they would recommend for the canopy tour and they weren't able to give me much useful info. They can book any tour but I actually found that doing it online myself was cheaper than their rates for both Selvetura and the Jeep Boat Jeep transfer.||||Breakfast: It was free so that's good but the food itself wasn't great. The eggs felt like they had been sitting around, they had bread but no butter or jam, and a few other things but really only the fruit was edible.||||The room: Our room was freezing (Monteverde gets cold at night) and the walls were super thin so we could hear everything around us. The shower was cold water and the wifi didn't really work except near reception.||||So overall, the room was clean but that's the only real thing this had...
