Just got back from a 5 night stay at the hotel Kompas.|Me and my husband had a lovely stay.||Arrival at Dubrovnik airport was plain sailing. Had a private transfer and was at the hotel in 20 minutes. |Was greeted by Igor, who is lovely and very helpful at all times. Check it was quick and smooth. Told were our room was and was pleasantly surprised. We was on the 8th floor (rooms 803) with amazing, and I mean amazing views. Floors 8 and 9, will definitely have the best views. Decent sized room and balcony. Room spotlessly clean, and kept clean during our entire stay. All bathroom amenities. Good shower. Comfortable bed and pillows. Bath robe and slippers provided. There was a mini bar, but we never used this as plenty of shops to by water etc just a few minutes walk. The hotel is on a hill, so when you enter, you are on the 10th floor. The ground floor is where you go for breakfast etc and takes you straight out to the beach and restaurants. Pool area is on the 1st floor.||Breakfast was plentiful and cooked to a good standard. Lovely cakes too, so I've not gone on the scales since coming home lol. We didn't eat any evening meals in the hotel but did eat twice around the pool bar area, which we ordered the burger and chips. Pool is on the small side and quite difficult to get a sun bed passed a certain time. We did manage, out of our 5 days, to get sun beds twice, once in the morning and the other time around 3ish. Nice bar area with fantastic views just by reception.||We did the Elaphiti islands tour. Loved it. Booked through the hotel, and the quest relations lady near the reception in the hotel, is really lovely. We had a transfer to the harbour in a lovely air conned Merc (our driver was superb, telling about the history etc, so polite and helpful - apologies as I have forgotten his name but if the hotel could mention this to him please, he is an asset to his company - we done this trip on Sunday 24th Aug). It was a full day on board with food. Had one hour each at Kolocep and Sipan and then onto Lopud for 3 hours. We went to Sunj beach, where there is sand. Be warned, the drinks at the only 2 bars, are very expensive on that beach, by time you hire sun beds and umbrella, it worked out expensive. But in hindsight, there was just a lovely beach just by were we docked. The islands are stunning. Don't hesitate to book through the hotel. Its a must see.||We also went to the old town and the walls. Its a must. Got the bus there and back for 10euros. Lots of places to eat and drink. Full of history, my husband loved it. Went early morning to try and avoid the crowds and the heat, probably the best time to go. There is an open top bus that can take you around the outside of the walls.||We also went to Lokrum island. 15 mins in a ferry from the old town. A must see for Kings Landing, game of thrones fans will know!! ||Around the hotel, there is plenty of bars and restaurants. Turning right (facing the sea) the restaurants tend to be more expensive, as sea facing, that is where you will find the Cave Bar in Hotel More. Turning left, they are slightly cheaper and feels more lively. Different choices of restaurants, that is where we ate for all the 5 evening meals. Mama Mia being one of the restaurants we tried, amongst others. Good sports bar that has happy hour between 1-5pm. There is also a couple of takeout places, so if you dont want to sit in a restaurant, take a pizza etc back to your room and chill on the balcony listening to the ocean.||Dubrovnik and the surrounding areas, is one of the safest, cleanest places I have had the pleasure in visiting. The whole time we was there, we did not see one police man/woman, that is because the crime rate is so low. People leave there keys in their mopeds etc.||All in all, we had a fabulous time. Would love to come, even though its expensive.|Thank you to the staff at Hotel Kompas for making it an...
Read moreWe chose to visit Croatia and stay at Hotel Kompas on our honeymoon and we were not disappointed. The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful and the hotel was very clean.
When we arrived, there was bubbly waiting in an ice bucket for us which I had requested, but the hotel did not charge us for this even though it was a request. We enjoyed this on our balcony in the sunshine and took in the beautiful view. We did not have a sea view as such as we had not opted for this at booking stage, however, the view was still beautiful of the park and gardens over the bay and the other hotels nestles in the hillside.
We returned one day to find beautiful red roses in our room and whilst we were staying at the hotel, my husband celebrated his birthday. We had a knock at the door and one of the hotel staff handed my husband a large cream cake covered with nuts and filled with chocolate and wished him happy birthday.
Our room was cleaned every day and the breakfast spread was extensive! They had fried breakfast (which us Brits love) as well as cereal, fruit, meats and cheeses, yogurt, pastries, oats, nus and dried fruit, pancakes, toast and small chocolate muffins and banana bread. There were also gluten free options.
There is a bar on the tenth floor with a beautiful view and a relaxed modern feel and a spa, gym and indoor and outdoor swimming pools on the first floor. We enjoyed a massage whilst there which was very relaxing and we used the gym and indoor pool. All facilities very clean and modern. The indoor pool even has sun loungers set out (it is very warm in there) and books available to read.
We ate in the hotel restaurant one evening and the pricing was very reasonable for a three course meal from the special menu. Very nice food and a quiet relaxed atmosphere.
We visited out of season so the outdoor pool appeared to be closed which was not an issue for us and the outdoor bar was also closed . Again, this was not a problem as the hotel is situated very close to a strip of restaurants and bars. At the top of the strip there is a bus stop where you can get a bus directly to Dubrovnik Old Town Pile gate.
There is a beautiful little beach next to the hotel but being out of season, the loungers were not out and there are bed type things but no mattresses. The weather was very stormy when we first arrived! I don't believe this beach belongs to the hotel but I think it must be very popular in the summer with guests.
We ordered room service one day using the television system in the room. Just like online shopping, add to cart and then confirm you wish to order! Very convenient and the food was lovely. We ordered a couple of films whilst there in the evening as well and this was added to our final bill which you can view on the television.
The hotel provide all the necessities such as slippers and dressing gown, three different sized towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. The wardrobes were ample and there are tea making facilities and a mini bar.
Overall, this was a very nice hotel to stay in. The only thing that was a bit odd was when we first arrived, I told the concierge that we had a reservation and without even looking he asked if we were sure we had a reservation. I'm not sure why but I had the feeling we were being judged on our appearance. We had had to walk a way with our suitcases and we were in travel clothes so this dampened check in a little but I may have misunderstood.
Would definitely recommend this hotel for cleanliness, friendliness, peace and quiet and good food! Thank you Hotel Kompas for making our...
Read moreVery well appointed hotel in a beautiful position overlooking Lapad beach. Lovely rooms most with a sea view, pedestrian walkway in front of the hotel so no road noise, unusually reception is on the 10th floor as you enter the hotel from the road at the back on top of the hillside, then descend to your room, you only do this at check in/out, thereafter you tend to enter and leave the hotel by floor ‘0’ onto the pedestrian way. All towels and shower gels/shampoo and conditioners are provided and the room staff visit twice a day, as previously stated, they leave chocolates for the guests each day.
Showers are the in bath type so involve a high step in and particularly out, which might not suit someone unsteady on their feet, the showers and bathrooms are otherwise excellent.
Air conditioning is interlocked with the veranda doors, so it only operates when they are closed. The bathroom fan needs both light and fan switch on to operate on a delay, and also, your room pass needs to be inserted into the doorway slot next to the bathroom. Aircon works without the room pass in place, so can be left on to cool the room while you are out for the day or evening.
Breakfast is multi choice, full cooked, fruit, cereals, cold meats etc and is very good. It is served at level 0 and has indoor and outdoor seating. Serving staff are friendly, accommodating and hard working.
The outdoor pool is at level 1, there is also a gym, sauna and indoor pool. Sunbeds and towels are provided for the guests and were rarely fully taken, this might not be the case at high season. There is also a bar at the poolside where they serve excellent freshly squeezed orange juice, its a timely process but worth the wait.
We met one lady who returned to the hotel at level 0 after 11pm to find the outside door locked, so had to climb 10 stories of outside steps to gain entry at reception. But, as we discovered, the doors can be opened by your room key, so climbing the steps is completely unnecessary!
There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, when we visited in May it was not necessary to book at most of them, the one exception being the Madonna which has a tiny rooftop terrace and excellent food.
The raised walkway west of the hotel is an excellent promenade and worth exploring, it brings you to the Cave bar Moré and the restaurant Moré which are fabulous. Further along are a couple more bars and restaurants.
Only restaurant we felt was not good value was the Casa restaurant right next to the hotel on the promenade which you can enjoy sunset views from but they make you pay for the privilege , we found nowhere more expensive or poorer value.
The marina is only a 10 minute walk away where there are more restaurants including Il Vento, Orka (evenings only) and the Hotel Lapad.
The number 6 bus is up by the roundabout at the Northwest end of the promenade and the no4 bus stops next to Mangos kitchen, both are frequent (every 15 mins or so) and quite cheap but do get very busy, often standing room only, but the journey into the old town is only 20 to 25 minutes.
Nearby is the Mango’s kitchen which is very nice, with great views over the bay and a decent choice of lunctime and evening snacks and meals.
Overall the hotel is excellent and well worth the 4 star rating, we enjoyed our...
