Day 7 of our 10-day Croatian adventure took a turn we didn’t expect. Our three daughters chose a restaurant outside Dubrovnik’s bustling Old Town, which my wife and I welcomed as a quieter break from the crowds. In hindsight, however, it turned out to be a regrettable and expensive misstep.
We’d been spoiled by incredible meals in Split and Dubrovnik’s Old Town, so venturing somewhere closer to our hotel seemed logical. The restaurant, ironically named “Pull Over,” felt more like a roadside trap — the name couldn’t have been more fitting considering how the wool was pulled over our eyes that night.
We ordered a variety of dishes: a burger, pork ribs, a tofu poke bowl, a chicken Caesar salad, and a kids breaded chicken with chips meal. What immediately struck us was the bizarre and excessive use of salt crystals on every dish — including the kids’ meal and the French toast served with the ribs.
To make matters worse, our table and surrounding tables were relentlessly plagued by wasps. It was clear the restaurant hadn’t taken proper pest control measures, making the dining experience borderline intolerable.
I raised concerns with the waiter about the Poke bowl. The rice was not only undercooked and crunchy, but also drenched in oil — an odd contradiction. When I explained we are very accustomed to Poke bowls, his response? “That’s how we cook it in Croatia.” I politely disagreed and emphasized how it was unpalatable and how improperly prepared it was.
I also pointed out the ribs were pink, chewy, and clearly undercooked. The waiter promised to speak with the chef, but sensing the evening was beyond salvageable, I asked for the bill. They offered a 10% discount — and then, quite boldly, asked if I wanted to leave a tip.
Total cost: €94. For food that barely met basic standards.
The kids’ breaded chicken was a piece of processed Chicken steak deep-fried — the same low-quality processed cut was also used in the Adult Caesar salad. From what we experienced, this restaurant is not operated by trained Cooks (I refer to Cooks as using the word Chefs would be disrespectful), nor does it appear to use quality ingredients. I managed a large restaurant in Covent Garden London, the Chefs would have been absolutely mortified if they let those dishes out of their kitchen like that, let alone had a complaint.
Having traveled extensively around the globe, this was hands-down one of the worst meals we’ve ever had. Whether you’d take the chance and eat here — well, I’ll leave that up to you. The Cooks need retraining to be Chefs and be proud of what goes out of that kitchen, the ingredients need addressing and most of all the customers need a positive experience no pests! You will not survive as a restaurant if not addressed , there are so many other...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I both ordered 2 different dishes. The tuna poke bowl which was served to us with tuna that was completely unappetizing because of the overwhelming fishy smell and an aftertaste that was almost metallically, crunchy rice, and just overall not edible. I tired a bite of her food to make sure and I immediately spit it out of my mouth into a napkin. We politely returned the meal and ordered a separate dish. Where were then ignored for the next 35-40 minutes by our waiter. The meal then arrived which was the mushroom risotto which was severely underwhelming. The third dish was the lamb and gnocchi which was the best of the 3 dishes but no very impressive and slightly undercooked. Overall the food experience was extremely poor.
To make matters worse the waiter then returned the tuna poke bowl to us at the end of our meal. When the waiter asked if everything was okay we politely said yes but wanted to talk more about the tuna which is when our waiter directed us to the manager. He began explaining how the tuna was caught the morning of our meal and everything was fresh and locally sourced. We expressed our issues again stating that our fish was excessively fishy smelling and tasting, along with the very very slimy texture and it left a disgusting aftertaste in our mouths. The manager then began to get super defensive about how the food was good to eat considering they sold over 150 in one day. When you look at other reviews about the poke there a decent amount of opinions that would agree with what is being stated in this review. Finally the manager continued to talk to both my girlfriend and I like we had no understanding of food and was directly disrespectful in the way the situation was handled. Stating things like “it disrespectful to say their fish is not good, and if you don’t want it then why would you order it” The night before this we had tuna at a restaurant where we had sashimi and tuna rolls. So we understood that tuna and overall fish in general should not smell and taste the way it did at this restaurant. When I told the manager this he just shook his head and walked away to retrieve our bill.
Overall this restaurant was very disappointing considering the other meals we have had on our trip have been outstanding. With all encounters with servers and hosts we have experienced amazing hospitality up until we went through our situation with Pull Over.
I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and believe there are better ways to spend your money in such a great city. Many restaurants can provide you with delicious food for less than €100. If you are in the mood for tuna and seafood I would recommend Bonsai Sushi & Wok in Old Town. (Their sea food is not fishy and you can...
Read moreThis place could have easily been a 4 star but our experience was ruined by the burger. We came as a family of 5, 2 adults and 3 kids aged 8, 10 and 16. Ordered 2 burgers, 2 seafood risottos and a pasta dish. 4 of the dishes were served perfectly with good flavour and taste. My 8 year old was served a burger that was raw on the inside. I informed them straight away and they ended up cooking another one but by the time we had all eaten our meals, my hungry daughter got her meal. Not great for her and for us having to wait for her to eat.
The thing that really annoyed me the most and hence the one star was the fact the waitress who was good and attentive and checked how we were getting along with our meals actually came over to inform me in future I have to order how I'd like the burger cooked, effectively placing the blame on me! As far as I'm aware and expect, burgers need to be fully cooked. Steaks are the only meat you advise how you want cooked. So I took insult to this as I felt if that was the way they do things in their restaurant then she should have asked while taking the burger order how we wanted it cooked. Interesting my son got his burger fully cooked.
Randomly the family next to us also ordered 3 burgers and one was sent back for exactly the...
