For the following main reasons...||1. I was travelling from Colombia on 2 Oct, expecting to arrive in Quito by evening on the same day. However the Colombian authorities had closed the border for 36 hours due to the referendum so I was significantly delayed. I sent an email to the hostel early evening as soon as I knew about the border closure. So they should have known that I will be late. I did not receive a reply to confirm they had got my email. ||||I eventually got there at 04.30 in the morning to find that there was no one around to let me in. I did not cancel my booking for that night hoping to have a bed to crash in. I called the contact number provided several times but no one answered the phone either. I had to wait on the steps of the hostel outside until 6am when someone finally woke up. ||||The hostel says 24 hour check in is available. Clearly it was not. ||||2. To make matters worse the guy that let me in spoke no English. He finally got a Russian guy who spoke some. This fellow went on to demand that I make full payment to the hostel that same morning. I realise of course that those are the terms but he showed no consideration how exhausted I was after the journey and that I hadn't slept all night partly because he was not around to let me in. ||||3. Next day I found that the shower was less than adequate. You had to choose between a tiny trickle of hot water or cold shower. ||||4. The room they offered me was not the one I had booked. I had booked the best large room. I got the second best one. The large one was not occupied. In fact there were no other guests in the hostel apart from me. ||||5. The manager did finally arrive (at least I think that's what he was) and was very apologetic. They offered me a free breakfast to compensate (when I was ready for it the person to give it was not around so I didn't get it that day. I did the following day and it was pretty mediocre). Note that there is no proper information desk at this hostel. There is an office where the manager sits, but no place where one can find information on Quito etc. ||||6. When I eventually paid them the money for the room they insisted on cash only. Their Hostelworld page definitely says they accept credit cards.||||7. They could not give me a receipt at the time I paid. It took them a further 2 days and several reminders before one was produced. ||||8. At checkout there was no one around. I called out to the Russian guy, checked for the manager. No one around to take my key or to help with my bags or to get me a taxi. Eventually I did find the Russian guy who helped. ||||All in this is the worst run hostel I have experienced yet. There is no real management to speak of, they have no idea of travellers' basic needs, and the information on their page is inaccurate. I admit that the staff were always cordial and polite. But their cordiality does not make up for their incompetence or lack of any...
Read moreMy partner and I booked this hotel through the wotif website. Upon arrival the place was all locked up, windows barred and in a moderately dodgy part of town. We knocked on the door several times and rang the door bell continually for 30 minutes but no one came to open the door. (It was not late, maybe 4pm). We eventually decided it was best we find somewhere else as it was now getting later and we had all our belongings with us, also the historical precinct is renowned for muggings at night. We found a humble little hostel about 5 blocks away that was nothing flash but staff were very friendly and helpful. They even called the contact number for the Guesthouse Nelson and spoke to someone who claims no-one had rung the bell and we must have been at the wrong address (which we were not as we confirmed the address). They claimed if we came back they would let us in. We went back the following morning as we had a 2 night booking and it was the same story. Knocking and buzzing the bell for 30mins and no reply. |I am not convinced this is acutally a hotel. Don't book this unless you...
