We spent 5 days in the Cuyabeno Dolphin lodge. We had a great time! The place is not called Dolphin lodge for nothing, as you can see the river dolphins right next to the lodging. Nature: So beautiful. We saw a wide range of animals such as anacondas, boas, spiders, sloths, 5 types of monkeys, ant eater, caiman, dolphins and various birds and butterflies. 10/10 Facilities and food: Nothing fancy, but everything you need: we had a double bed, mosquito net, towels, soap and hot water in our room. But remember, it's a jungle lodge, not a typical hostel! The shared space included free water, coffee, tea and cocoa at all times. The food wasn't anything fancy but I liked it - a lot better than an average almuerzo in the cities. Breakfast was good, especially the bread they made and the lemon juice. 8/10 Naturalists: They were both, Darwin and Pedro born and raised in the jungle. They knew the river and the animals like their own pockets. They were great and happy to answer any questions you had. It was amazing how they spotted the animals in the dense forrest. If you meet Darwin, ask him to show his animal pictures from his phone, they were great! 10/10 Program: The highlight was definitely the night walk in the jungle and the visit to the Siona village. It was nice to see how they lived and the shaman was a funny fellow. We cooked yucca bread from skratch for lunch, served with tuna salad and rice. Yammy! I wish we have had a bit more walking in the jungle as now we were sitting quite a lot in the canoe - which is the best place to see the...
Read moreJust returned from a 5 day experience at Cuyabeno Dolphin Lodge. Everything was fantastic and I highly recommend that you book Dolphin Lodge! The staff were amazing, Elias our guide had excellent english and knowledge of wildlife in the area - everything was organised very well - our rooms were huge and even had hot showers (not that you needed the hot water in the humid reserve!) - The food was a huge surprise - excellent variety and flavours - lots of local and international food and plenty of it - we were never hungry! The communication pre booking with Mike was also fantastic - he answered all the questions I had via whatsapp.
As for the animals! Cuyabeno is specially - its not overally touristed and ruined because of it. The animals are truly wild and this makes the experiece special. We saw 4 types of Monkeys, a lot of birds - including Toucan, Maccaw, Woodpecker, giant Heron and beautiful Pygmy Kingfisher, Otters, a sloth, a very sweet pet Capybara on our visit to the local village, plenty of Caiman, spiders, frogs, scorpion, insects!
Overall - a highlight of our 6 months in South America. You will not regret booking Dolphin Lodge/Cuyabeno...
Read moreVisiting the amazon was amazing, but I wouldn't recommend this lodge. The people working here are super nice, the guides are good, but the facilities are very bad. It seems like the owner just doesn't put any money in it to sustain the place. I have visited the amazon before and for this kind of money you can get much better.
Being in an area where there is yellow fever and malaria, the safety and health of your visitors should be a number one priority. However, the misquote nets over the beds were super old and dirty, and ripped in multiple places.
The food is very average, when we arrived it was fine but it went downhill from there (best plate I would rate a 6/10, the worst 2/10).
If you are going I would recommend to bring something to fix the misquito nets and also some snacks, especially for the first day as there was no opportunity to get any breakfast.
Also the 'eco lodge' is just in the name, they don't do anything that can be marked as ecological - expect to smell a lot...
