We stayed two nights after a Nile Cruise. If I was staying in Aswan again, I think I'd try a different hotel.
The main reason is that the beds were not great, and the hotel noisy. The bed was super soft, so much so that is was a little like sleeping on a slope. I think it was partially the matress and partially the bed itself. Both were well used and old.
We'd booked a garden view, as this seemed quieter. But we were 'upgraded' to a pool view. We said we didn't want, they insisted. I assumed they had no garden view rooms and sold it as an upgrade.
The pool view is close to the Nile, and party boats run past until quite late with loud music. It travela to the room.
The rooms are all just a bit old and dated and the pictures online don't represent reality. Our safe didn't work on check in, and needed to be reset with a key. The usual promise of 5 minutes was much longer. We were in a rush to get out and after 20 minutes waiting, I chased at reception. The reception manager took this opportunity to try and sell me trips. I told him we'd been on a cruise, and also done Abu Simbel. But he continued to try and sell them to me.
The taxi to airport was quoted as $35. We went with booking.com which was half the price. So one suspects their tours would be similarly marked up.
The air con was effective, but noisy and made lots of strange noises. It did work though
The mini bar fridge was ok, it kept things slightly cold. I put my temperature gauge in and said 12 degrees Celsius.
The pool is nice, there is fixed shade though. So in the afternoon/evening. Most loungers will have no shade at all. The pool was clean and there are pool towels.
The breakfast wasn't great, but not awful. We had it at 6am on leaving (when it opened), and the food was cold. They lit the burners after we'd got our food. So who knows when they prepared it
We used the bar/restaurant which was great one night. Excellent service, very cold beers and lovely. The second night, warm beers, big groups of locals playing their own music loudly on their phones (there is already music from restaurant sound system), and less good service. Beers were 140 EGP, including tax and service charge. So a pretty good deal when they were cold
Make your own choice, personally, I'd risk somewhere different...
Read moreI had a pretty rough time at Obelisk Nile Hotel recently. There were a bunch of issues that seriously messed with my stay. From the room not being clean, to stuff they seemed to not care, about and way too much noise—it was hard to ignore the problems.
First off, the room (416) was seriously lacking in cleanliness. Dust everywhere, a toilet that wouldn't stop running, and a bathroom that looked like it got a half-hearted cleaning job. I was left wondering if hygiene was even on their radar.
Then, there was this busted closet in the room. I told the front desk, thinking they'd sort it out quickly. But nope, despite them saying they'd send someone, no maintenance person ever showed up. It made me question how much they actually cared about keeping guests happy.
The AC remote was another headache, the battery was barely holding on, and it stopped working after a few hours. So, I ended up stuck in a hot room with no way to cool things down. Since my past attempts to get help from the front desk hadn't gone anywhere, I didn't bother asking for a new remote. When I asked for an extra key, they hit me with the "one key per room" rule. Seriously? In a world where safety and convenience matter, that policy felt outdated and just made things more inconvenient for me.
All in all, my time at Obelisk Nile Hotel fell way short of what I expected. The lack of cleanliness (which was the main problem and a big question not only to the hotel but also to the local authorities who still give them permission to rent those types of rooms), ignored maintenance issues, the one-key rule, and the never-ending noise made it a pretty subpar experience. I really hope the folks running the place take these problems seriously and make some changes for the better. Future guests deserve a way better stay...
Read moreI stayed at Obelisk Nile hotel from Thursday April 28 to May 2. The customer service I received here from the senior receptionist was a legitimate nightmare. I have traveled to many countries and the absolute horrific service I received at this hotel will not soon leave my memory. Firstly, the hotel did not provide Wi-Fi throughout the facility. The first night, the senior receptionist Aref stated it was a technical issue and they were fixing the problem and that the problem would be fixed in the night. Throughout my entire stay, there was no Wi-Fi and the only little Wi-Fi that could be used could only be accessed in the reception area. I brought toys to donate to children and asked if the senior receptionist could coordinate a means for me to be able to give the toys out to the children. I initially asked him about donating to the Nubian village and he told me he would find out information for me but never got back to me. On my last day here finally he said he could accompany me to the street to help give the toys out to the children in an organized manner. As I went across the street to donate, I was literally bombarded by people on these streets under his directions. The senior receptionist pointed to me and the bag and called out to people to come for the donation. There were grown adults snatching stuff from the bag and he offered no relief. My friend who accompanied me literally had to help me get back across the street safely because he left us behind. He offered no means to help alleviate the horrific situation that I just went through. This man does not need to be in any senorial position. I felt unsafe and was in shock through the whole ordeal. I would never stay at this...
