I'll do you a big favour and tell you to read through reviews carefully before making a conclusion. Hotel Lumen is situated in the St George Area of Hamburg very close to the Station so makes it an ideal place to stay if you intend heading out for the day on the ICE trains. Yeah, it's a lively area but where isn't nowadays? I felt 100% safe in the area because it seems to have a sense of community. Now, I'm only basing that on the couple of nights I stayed there. The Hotel itself is literally a 5 minute walk up a busy street to the Station so I hardly think you're going to be a victim of crime in that short walk! |It gets very lively in the early hours so if you like to sleep with a window open, bring your ear plugs as I do! |The Hotel itself has 24/7 reception so no problem checking in late. The rooms are basic (hey, you probably paid around 50 quid/euros/dollars a night to stay so what do you expect? I was very pleased with my room. The bed seemed fine and clean and the bathroom was clean and functional. |I didn't take the breakfast option so can't comment. |Overall ill say this. As a budget Hotel it did the job with knobs on. The sounds from the street are interesting sometimes but as I said, tell me any other City Centre that doesn't have a rough area. It has a Penny supermarket directly across the road which is well stocked and cheap! |All in all, I'd defo stay here again if i ever had to come back to Hamburg. It's a...
Read moreI implore you, if you are visiting Hamburg, do not stay at this hotel, or any hotel near here. The area is seedy and not safe. My wife and I stayed here for one day recently, as it seemed the perfect area to explore Hamburg from. It's close to the train and only a short walk to the central areas of the city. However, upon returning to the hotel to rest up before venturing out again later (at approximately 15:30), we saw a man get attacked with a knife directly in front of the hotel. There are also strip clubs on the street and open prostitution. The area that this hotel is in just is not safe (look east of the train station for a safer area). The hotel itself was fine, and has instituted safety measures, such as needing to be buzzed in to the hotel, not admitting guests who aren't signed up to stay, and making guests deliver their key to the front desk when they leave, so that they can help control who comes and goes. The room itself is clean. However, if you don't feel safe when taking a step outside of your hotel, there's not much the hotel itself can...
Read moreGot bedbugs! NOT a safe area. Photos are deceiving!
First, I want to say that the staff were very friendly and kind. But the positive review ends there. Unfortunately, we were not aware that this hotel is located in such a sketchy area of Hamburg. We realized that any hotel near the main train station is not safe for families or solo travelers.
As for the hotel, it is quite old and could use a renovation. Upon entering you have to go up a flight of stairs to reach the lobby. The elevator only fits 2 people and stops in between each floor so you still have to haul your suitcases up the stairs. The room itself was pretty old. We were initially given a smoking room, but then asked to change to a nonsmoking room. But the only one they had left with 3 beds had a broken shower door. We found small stains on the bed sheets.
My family returned from our trip with bedbug bites. This was by far the worst hotel I stayed at during my Germany trip this past...
