I write this review at the end of 3 incredible months, we have had the good fortune to travel through Greece and it’s beautiful islands and will be leaving on Thursday so this review I leave to last as it is about the stand out in terms of island, hotel and incredible experience & for me it is HYDRA (Idra) & the “pension” we stayed at; UPPER HYDRA ACCOMMODATION. Giannis & Iffy, our hosts, were generous & warm. They couldn’t do enough for us. Our room with juliet balcony overlooked the magical Harbour with to die for sunset views. In terms of our room and what I appreciated the most was the attention to detail, the room had everything, Nespresso machine, iron, plenty of hangers, Molton Brown bathroom accessories. The bed, pillows, linen all superb. White, light and bright with timber floors & the lady who looked after our room was so kind, she helped me with my washing, she kept our room immaculate, what a joy to walk into a room with fresh sheets & fluffy towels everyday. Every morning we would make our way downstairs to Isalos Café & Bar, the café/bar also owned by Giannis & Iffy for our complimentary breakfast. Fresh orange juice, 100’s of double espressos later plus the friendliest wait staff, we would watch Hydra’s magic unfold and then finally decide to amble our way through the town, either hopping onto a boat to one of the gorgeous beaches or just walking and discovering Hydra where donkeys and man power are the mode of transport. Hydra is cool, it doesn’t have to shout out about anything, service, restaurants, boutiques, secret swimming spots, the people, the donkeys are all top notch. Giannis dinner recommendations were spot on. Everyday just got better. I wanted to stay longer but sadly for us and no surprise Upper Hydra was full otherwise we would have stayed longer! When we left, it was like leaving old friends and a touching gesture from Giannis; Isalos take away coffee cups and a pot of their home made honey. I want to return next year. Hydra is magical. Upper Hydra is seriously the...
Read moreWe stayed in Upper Hydra for our first visit to this incredible island, and it was nothing short of fantastic. Just a short and easy ferry ride from Athens, Hydra immediately swept us away the moment we stepped off the boat. Even more spectacular was discovering that our apartment was only 20 meters from the ferry — you couldn’t ask for a better location.
After spending the previous two weeks around the Ionian Islands, exploring Hydra felt like such a treat. The island is full of life, with beautiful walks and hikes, phenomenal restaurants, and a vibrant food and bar scene that exceeded all our expectations.
But what truly made our stay unforgettable was the accommodation itself. On our very first night, we sat out on the balcony, gazing over the iconic harbour. Watching the boats glide in and out and the mules moving through the streets was pure magic. To top it all off, the staff at Café Isalos were beyond phenomenal — incredibly accommodating, warm, and genuinely hospitable. They went out of their way to make us feel welcome and cared for. Each morning, we enjoyed an amazing breakfast there, fit for a king, before spending our days reading, lounging, and simply watching the world go by.
The accommodation itself had everything we could possibly need: excellent bathrooms, fantastic rooms, and great housekeeping. We couldn’t recommend it more highly and truly can’t wait to...
