The hotel is well situated in the centre of the harbour-front on the fabulous island of Hydra. The room, number 106, was quirky - to say the least. The bed, on a mezzanine level up some quite severe wooden stairs, is overhung by sloping wooden beams and underlaps the wall by 15cms at one side. It faces the TV. The main area was fine with sofa-bed, wardrobe, coffee table, a small fridge and a balcony. The shower room was adequate but power had to be switched on 15 minutes before showering, and off during the shower. The basin had no hot water supply.|Breakfast was varied and interesting and is served, buffet style, at a single, communal table. Be prepared to give your country of origin and length of stay to every new arrival.|Nikos, the manager, was excellent. He worked tirelessly to re-arrange transport when the ferries were cancelled due to high winds in the Saronic Gulf.|The balcony overlooks the loading / unloading area where, daily, from 07.00 to 11.00, supply boats bring all the goods which the island needs. These are then moved on, quite quietly, by mules and electric carts. It’s very entertaining.|The ‘Three Islands in One Day’ boat disgorges a couple of hundred tourist between 11.00 and 13.00 daily. I would suggest a stay of three or four nights would bring the benefits of this traffic-free, slow...
Read moreJust had an amazing stay at Hotel Sophia in Hydra. Learned that it was the first hotel in Hydra, predating the town/island’s emergence as a popular tourist destination. The hotel retains its charm while also feeling comfortably updated.||We were fortunate to have one of the rooms with a balcony looking over the harbor, providing an entertaining front row seat to the comings and goings of locals and tourists alike. And with the unique “no cars” policy, witnessing the morning offloading of goods from the boats and being loaded onto the backs of the ubiquitous donkeys for delivery around town was a fantastic experience.||The excellent homemade breakfast was served with enthusiasm and charm, and guests sit family style around a common table, fostering wonderful conversation with fellow travelers offering a welcome change from the typical isolation of most hotel breakfast offerings.||And the staff go out of their way to take care of their guests. A special shout out to Nick, who helped many guests who were stranded or otherwise impacted by issues with the ferries including a strike and several cancellations due to wind and rough seas. Above and beyond.||Location, comfort, great service. Can’t...
Read moreHotel Sophia is a great location and the 6 rooms offer different benefits. The Hotel looks directly on to the Harbour but has rooms at the back that in busy times may be quieter than the Front Rooms. The premium rooms are obviously at the front with Balconies and loft Bedrooms. |The test of all accommodation is where there is a problem. In this case the problem was of my making as it turned out but I must commend the Hotel on their responses to my concerns and the solution they formulated for my wife and I. |Hydra is a quiet beautiful place with immense history for Greece. There are no cars or motorbikes so expect to get your steps up each day. We stayed here three nights / two days and had a lovely time. There are plenty of restaurants available and the standard of food was consistently good at all the restaurants we went to. Breakfast at the hotel was good and all up my wife and I loved our stay. We had never been to Hydra before but can understand why people have come here in the past and never left. I must stress the difficulty I had was of my making on Booking the Hotel. Great Stay - Lovely...
