I have no idea why there are so many rave reviews for this hotel. My fiance and I have never had such a horrendous experience!
First of all, the service was horrible! We were stuck at this hotel due to a delayed Iceland Air flight that caused us to have to spend the night. We assumed that since this hotel has a working relationship with the airline that we would be treated as humans and not cattle, but that was not the case. Upon arrival from the airport shuttle, we were told dinner would be served “soon,” and it would be complementary. We quickly discovered that it was a meal fit for animals — meatballs and goulash. Thats it! No fruit, vegetables, or anything that wasn’t brown (there were also babies and toddlers on our flight — these are the options for them? Are you kidding me?).
Feeling extremely disgusted by the lack of options for people with dietary restrictions and wanting something that isn’t meatballs, we asked the concierge for a voucher to the hotel restaurant in lieu of that meal and they refused. We were told we’d get a voucher but it looks like that was a lie the whole time — Iceland Air didn’t care for our dietary restrictions and neither did the hotel. Oh, and by the way, the food at the hotel restaurant was extremely expensive for what you get! So paying out of pocket in lieu of the provided cattle feed was not an option as we just finished a long trip to Italy.
After my fiancé and I ordered some pizza (still super expensive — what would’ve been $30 in the U.S. was $50 here!), I went back to the front desk to ask for some complimentary drinks/water and was met with a level of attitude I’ve never experienced before from hotel staff. I ended up snapping at the front desk out of disbelief and exhaustion that they wouldn’t give us water or anything after what we’ve been through. Finally they gave me two bottles of sparkling water after explaining how I’d just like to be hydrated at the very least. I then took them back up to my room only to discover you need a bottle opener… so back to the front desk for me.
My fiance and I were finally able to get some rest to only be woken up a mere 2 hours later (11:30pm) by loud music. At first I thought it was a neighbor so I went out into the hallway to check. Lo and behold, it was not a neighbor but the restaurant and bar staff! There were no patrons anywhere and yet they still thought it to be a great idea to blare music so people can’t sleep! I went down to the front desk to ask the same front desk staff I had been dealing with to turn down the music. After 5 minutes of being back up in our room, I noticed there was no change in sound level. I went back down only to find the sound hadn’t been adjusted at all— clearly this concierge doesn’t take her job seriously or care for others in real life or at work. I once again had to strongly and rudely express my disappointment and asked to see a manager only to be met with “there’s no manager available - I’m the manager” type of behavior. I went back upstairs to find it was finally turned down.
Onto the room itself… the other reviews that the hotel “looks nice” are valid, but the quality is just not there. The walls are paper thin, lighting in the room is wholly insufficient, the shower is super small and water gets all over the entire bathroom floor, towels are SMALL and have stains on them, there is no complimentary water or even a small snack, the pillows are very thin and the bed is lumpy/uneven. I also agree with other reviewers about the temperature — we only had one window we could open as we couldn't operate the thermostat even though it was boiling in our room. It’s clear this hotel only worries about first floor aesthetic/appearances and not the quality of the amenities and sleeping arrangements for its hotel guests on the...
Read moreWe stayed 1 night at Hotel Keflavik. The location is dependent upon what your needs are when you travel. For us it was good; there's a 24 hour market right down the road (within walking distance of the hotel). There's also a gas station next to the hotel and a KFC not too far away. I booked the deluxe room (#127). During my stay the lobby was very upscale. I almost had to check my booking to make sure I didn't book a room I couldn't afford. Stone lions sit at the entrance, looks to be marble flooring or faux marble in the lobby with other upscale decor. There's a restaurant to the side of the front desk. It looked clean, and people seemed to be enjoying their time there. We didn't eat there (nothing to do with the menu or hotel), we just had other plans. But, they do begin serving breakfast at 0430 which was a plus. Now, our room was in a different area of the hotel that was being renovated so once we got our keys we exited the main entrance and had to enter a side entrance. The hall to our room was upscale, clean and well lit. The room itself was clean, comfortable and the bathroom was beautiful. White faux or real marble throughout, up-to-date sink, toilet and shower. We also got a kit that included conditioner, shampoo, body wash, shave kit, bath salt, lotion. There is a mini fridge in the room, and the TV has cable. No A/C which was a common thing around Iceland, and only 1 window to open if you got hot. However they do supply a Dyson Hot + Cool fan in the room. The blinds are operated by remote which was cool, and the bed was a twin double which like the A/C was very common to see in the numerous hotels we stayed in while in Iceland. However, it was comfortable. The water in the room gets very hot so if you're not careful you'll burn yourself but it was nice for us. Felt like being in the states because other hotels had warm water, and none got as hot as Hotel Keflavik. Now with that being said I don't recommend taking a shower before bed because there's no A/C or vent so the only way to cool the room off is the window and our room got a little toasty after showering. It wasn't uncomfortably hot but was noticeably warmer than the hall to enter. Check out was by 11a.m. and was a breeze. I handed the employee my key cards and was on my way. The only thing I think people may not be a fan of is: To close the door you have to slam it shut so if another guest adjacent to you is leaving you'll hear...
Read moreMe and my girlfriend booked this hotel as our last stay due to early flight tomorrow morning. Outside of the bedrooms, the hotel looks amazing with expensive materials, staff was friendly and check in and check out were smooth, sadly that's all the positive we have for this hotel.
The room we received was clearly a much older room that was retrofitted by people who don't care but simply trying to check some boxes.
Issues with bathroom: The bathroom faucet handle would hit the sink when you turn it on The bathroom sink was designed with in recess sink but was fill in and installed with this sink, making the counter too high (I'm 6 feet tall) The bathtub in raised and no step making it dangerous to go in and out when wet. Water shield too small making water go everywhere no fan and the window barely open therefore making the hot steam no where to go but in your room door lock is failing apart with a hole that's not cover in anyway The rain shower head barely clear the roof of the building making the water goes everywhere. The hot and cold water adjustment is designed to be install a lot higher off the floor, making you bend down to adjust the hot water, the result of this movement is that your hand will touch the hot water supply, it is not enough to burn you or anything but felt hot. Definitely something I never encounter with any other hotel.
Issues with bedroom: We made a request for a queen but was given two twin, we then have to combine it ourselves Bedroom soundproofing is horrible, noise from the bar can be heard till almost 1AM even with the window shut. The window barely open making the room very hot. We turned everything down but the heat is coming from somewhere else. The installer put newer blinds outside on the older blinds, making the inside one not adjustable, but the newer blinds are not sun blocking. It wasn't an issue for us since we woke up early, but I can see this being an issue for others who wanna sleep in a bit.
Since we only stay the one night and have early flights, we did not experience the restaurant. Overall it was a below average stay while paying above average money, wish we would stay somewhere else a little newer and design for comfort instead of this perceived 1990s Chinese luxury that focus more on style...
