Hotel Rex — Hotel in Florence

We are a group of 3 young women travelling for the first time in Europe. Thus far on our trip, we have been met with friendly, respectful and professional attitudes/service. However, upon checking in, our interaction with the concierge has left an extremely sour taste in our mouths.

After travelling for four hours, we had to use the restrooms (which I don’t think is an unreasonable request or need for people who are paying for rooms in the hotel). We dropped off our luggage and started looking around the first floor for a restroom. There was a partially propped open curtain leading to a room, so we naturally peered in to see if that was the restroom. However, it wasn’t, so I went to the desk and asked the man working there where it was. Immediately, he started talking and treating me as if I were a child, speaking in an extremely condescending tone and telling me that instead of looking around for a bathroom, I should have immediately asked him instead. Even after I said okay and apologized, he took it as a sign to continue reprimanding me. It made me feel extremely belittled and embarrassed for something that I now believe was not unreasonable. It was an extreme reaction to a normal thing to do and he truly just acted/treated me as if I was lacking the intelligence or didn’t deserve his respect.

I have never been met with such a condescending attitude, not in my home country or Europe. I don’t believe my friends or I did anything to trigger such a denigrating response. A part of me wonders if this would have happened if we werent women or if 2/3 of the members of our group were people of color. This experience was truly...

Not a terrible price for location but very dated and stuffy. Would never book again. It was the worst hotel on our trip. Our room was on the street side on the second floor (3rd) and the city sound felt like it was in our room. First night there was some drunk American woman shouting at people in the streets outside at 3am and sounded like she was in the room with us. Second night things quieted down around 3am. Third (and thankfully finally night) there was some group outside on the street chatting and laughing until 4:30am, which woke us up and also apparently our neighbouring room because they banged on our wall to quiet down. Needless to say, soundproofing was awful and we're running low on sleep. Its a pretty busy street during the day as well and the windows are thin, so not great if you want to sleep at all. Bring earplugs or noise canceling headphones if you must stay here. We're used to city noise but this is something else.||No control over A/C either unfortunately, so it was very warm in our south facing room especially during such a hot weekend of 36 degrees. We had better luck trying to get some airflow by opening up the windows occasionally, except then we'd have to close them due to street noise. Allergies were terrible staying here. Dusty/dirty carpets throughout the hallways and stairs. Headboards smelled smoky and dusty. I have mixed feelings on our stay at this particular hotel. We chose the hotel on price and location and in those respects it was fine. Our first night, in a room which had seen better days, overlooked the busy street below. It was almost impossible to sleep as the noise below of diners and revellers continued into the early hours, then the noise of cleaners and various workers started up again a few hours later. Luckily after enquiring at reception for a quieter room we were moved into a room that overlooked a small courtyard. The room had obviously been renovated and was way more quiet and comfortable. We dealt with the mosquito issue by keeping the external door closed and borrowed a plug-in insect repellent from front office. The hotel is very close to the rail station and major attractions. The breakfast room, though small, was adequately stocked and well serviced by the highly efficient, minimal kitchen team.
