What a gem of a hotel. Tucked away in more of a quiet residential street yet only a stones throw from the Colosseum and walking distance to the Metro (both lines). Lots of great restaurants nearby (not the tourist trap type) with very reasonable prices and tasty authentic Italian food. The hotel is beautifully styled with antique furniture giving it a bygone era feel which we loved - none of the ultra modern you could be anywhere in the world stuff here. We booked a room with an outside terrace, it was just lovely. Whilst not huge it was certainly big enough and had a high ceiling so felt very airy. Good air conditioning. There was more than enough closest and draw space. The bathroom is very small but perfectly adequate and super clean. The cherry on the cake was the terrace, what a fabulous spot which we made good use of on an evening after long days exploring the sights. Lovely size, view of the Colloseum ( which looked super at night all lit up) two very comfortable deck chairs and a table and chairs too. There are only 3 rooms with a terrace (one is the suite) so for those without there is a communal terrace right next to these rooms with a good amount of seating and you get the same views. When we were there it wasn’t overly used. Breakfast is by way of communal tables, I’ve got to be honest this did fill me with dread, I’m not a morning person and very reserved and will always choose a table for two. However, whilst I can’t say that I loved this set up I didn’t find it too bad and never missed a breakfast. Breakfast offering was continental and there was a good array of things to choose from, I found the cheeses particularly delicious. The owner of the hotel is also a chef and each evening offers up a “chefs table” type of affair which consists if a limited 3 course menu at a very low rate. Again this is communal and was taken outside in the small ground garden/terrace. We didn’t partake because such communal gatherings just fill me with utter dread but I’ve got to say they appeared well patronised and everyone sounded like they were really enjoying themselves. The hotel has a small bar which is well stocked and prices reasonable, there was sometimes a wait but nothing major. All staff were very friendly and helpful. There is off street parking for a handful of cars and I suspect it’s a first come first served basis as we didn’t have a car we didn’t use it so best to check details direct with the hotel. The lift is tiny, only room for 1 person and a large suitcase, we never had to wait for it the entire duration of our stay however. Guests during our stay appeared to be predominantly American with many being returning customers. When we return to Rome we too will always look to stay at The Lancelot,...
Read morePositives: Hotel Lancelot is in a great spot very close to walking (7 minutes) to the coliseum and the old Roman city. It hotel is in an older building and has some niced dated furniture pieces to relax on in the "sala". Bar is well stocked, and dinner was filling. Breakfast is great for a light morning fill up to get you out the door. I you drive a car to hotel, make sure you reserve a parking spot. Its a tight space.
Distractions: Room we had (#103) was tired. AC ran at one speed - turbo high but blew no cold air. Funiture has all but seen its best days. The two chais in the room were both health hazards. They literally are falling apart. It would have been better to have no chairs. There is nothing to put your suitcases on, so you have to leave them on the floor where THE ARMY OF ANTS WILL MAKE AN INSPECTION of the new items. The bathroom was crying out for a genuine cleaning. The soap scum was at a minimum over a year old. It's hard as a rock.
In short for $300 @ night I was expecting a room with comfort and cleanliness. Our room fell very short.
My wife said to not post pictures as they were too gross.
UPDATE 1/5/24 I stand by my review. The management has issued a rebuttal yet none if this is relevant to our disappointing stay and the lack of a Quality Room. When said the furniture was literally falling apart I had to take string out of my travel bag to bind it together. The shower WAS FILTHY. I was trying to be kind. When we brought these to the attention of the staff in the morning we were met with a shoulder shrug and an indifferent attitude.
It seems the owner is willing to disregard the facts and offer excuses to my stay. If you book here don't be surprised by the army of ants, the dirty filthy showers, the disastrous old furniture and lack of human...
Read moreI had a lovely time staying at Hotel Lancelot while in Rome. Overall, I would say it's good value for price.
First, I'd just like to get the cons out of the way, since I want to end with all the positive things I want to say. The walls are somewhat thin, so you may hear people talking outside or the staff doing work. You can also hear the pipes carrying water when other rooms flush. I also heard boisterous laughter around midnight during my last night, which I would normally sleep through, but I was anxious about missing my train that time. If you're sensitive to noises, this might be something to keep in mind.
However, everything else was perfect. It's not a corporate hotel chain; it's family-owned, and you do get a more homey feel in the hotel. The lobby is also spectacularly decorated. Some things I liked:
The dinners were delicious. If you choose to avail of dinner, for 25 euros you get a 3-course meal served with wine and coffee. You're seated together at a table with other guests, and I had conversations with very wonderful people. The staff were very helpful and courteous. The adapter I brought wasn't compatible with Europe outlets, and they lent me two. They also called a taxi for me when I was leaving for the station at 5 AM in the morning. It's very close to the Colosseum. You can walk to it in maybe 10-15 minutes. Other Rome attractions are close enough with public transportation options.
Thanks for making my stay in Rome comfortable...
