Early Christians prayed and celebrated liturgy in their private houses, in places of worship called “Domus Ecclesiae”. According to tradition, it is thought that the majority of the Churches in Rome are built over the Houses of the first Christians.

The basements of the ancient Basilica of Saints John and Paul on the Caelian Hill sheds light on the historicity of this tradition.

Tradition holds that the first building was built in the year 398 by the Roman Senator, Pammachius, who fashioned the house of the two Christian martyrs, John and Paul, into a Christian Basilica. Today, the relics of the two martyrs are traditionally venerated and placed under the main altar.

Also attributed to Senator Pammachius is the semi-legendary “Passio”, the story of the martyrdom of Saints John and Paul. In the story of“Passio” it is said that the martyrs were eunuchs of Constantina, daughter of Constantine the Great, and were Roman soldiers in the Constantine Army. After the political changes that came with the arrival of Emperor Julian the Apostate to the throne, the two brothers were martyred for not betraying the faith of Jesus Christ, being secretly decapitated in their home, where they were later buried.

To substantiate this tradition, we went to the archeological site, located beneath the Church, in search of any evidence.

Mariana Giustini, an expert of the site, greeted us with some surprising news, saying that, in fact, the “Passio” was key in identifying the place of the martyrdom of Saints John and Paul. The excavations occurred at the end of 19th century, organized and commissioned by a Passionist priest, Father Germano di...

The space is amazing and the staff extremely helpful. However, I think a guide is necessary because the descriptions are hilariously badly translated and nonsensical. The most frustrating thing was that the recorded audio guides don’t appear to come with headphones, so although we decided to opt out every room we went in had several other people booming pre-recorded information in several languages at top volume. We definitely didn’t do this space in the way that the museum is set up to be experienced, which is a shame as our preference is generally to read the information at our own pace. Honestly I think my encounter was definitely less than four stars, but I can easily see that it would be fantastic if you are happy to follow the...

This is one of the best sites showing an ancient Roman house in the entire city. It’s underneath a church, has been immaculately restored, and has a first rate audio guide. Upon entering, you walk into a number of the rooms and see the fresco decorations on the walls - in near perfect condition. The audio guide talks you through the imagery in the frescoes, pointing out clues about the people who lived there. The house had several stories, a dining room, a wine cellar, several alters, connecting corridors, wells and staircases. There is an amazing little museum at the conclusion. I’m amazed this site is not better known.

Very cool piece of Roman history. You can see the remnants of the insulae that led to shops which were later absorbed by two Roman villas which then were bought by one owner and made one huge villa. Remnants of frescoed walls of the villas, a wine cellar/kitchen, street between the two villas connecting one side of the Caelian hill to the Palatine side, a nymphaeum, a thermal bath under all of this (all subterranean now), from about 2-3rd century). There is also a museum housing artifacts discovered here. Fascinating!
